On Memorial Day, lay a wreath for Travis “T-Bo” Twiggs. The decorated Marine Corps staff sergeant apparently shot his brother and then himself in Arizona on May 15, perhaps to fulfill a suicide pact.

Plant a flag for Nils Aron Andersson, an Army recruiter who shot himself last year in a Houston parking garage. His new wife killed herself a day later.

Honor them all, the men and women of the armed services who returned from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan but could not survive the wars within.

The crisis of suicide among returning service members is working its way into the public consciousness, partly because of outrage over the Bush administration’s effort to conceal the magnitude.
