Barr begins quest for Libertarian nomination

Barr begins quest for Libertarian nomination

By Aaron Gould Sheinin
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 05/23/08

It is a 1,404-mile drive from Atlanta to Denver.

Ten Georgia Libertarians took off in a rented van from Atlanta at 7 p.m. Wednesday, with 21 hours of interstate ahead of them.

Lance Lamberton of Austell, one of the 10, was not looking forward to it.

"I don't like long car rides anyway," he said. "But this is going to be with a bunch of smelly Libertarians. And I don't think there's going to be any girls on the trip, either."

So why put himself through such an ordeal?

"Because Bob Barr is running," he said. "He's very presidential. He's very credible."

The Libertarian nominating convention is in Denver this weekend. (Wonder if Rush Limbaugh is hoping they have riots, burned cars, etc. there??)

1. That story is a riot.
I read it in the dead-tree version of the AJC this morning. The idea of 10 silly Ayn Rand geeks road-tripping it to Denver... it has the makings of a side-splitting low-budget indie film.

2. I chuckled as I read it, too
Doug Craig of Griffin was in the van with Lamberton. He said there were eight Barr supporters on board, with one undecided and one backing California Libertarian Steve Kubby.

About 9 a.m. Eastern time Thursday, the Georgians had pulled over at a truck stop in Kansas. While there, they just happened to catch Barr on a radio talk show.

The Kubby backer, however, was asleep in the van, with a surprise in store.

"He passed out," Craig said, "and we put George Phillies stickers all over him. He doesn't realize it yet."

Phillies, of Massachusetts, is another Libertarian presidential candidate. There are, in fact, 14 of them, some of whom have been running for more than a year and have been party activists for decades.

I'm really liking these guys a lot right now, though. If they can suck away a few percent of McCain's voters, they'll have done the country a favor.

More than likely, though, they'll attract people who'd otherwise sit this one out. Still, there should be more good amusement value to come.

I wonder if Colorado Indymedia will cover the Libertarian convention?

3. Oh yeah, I LOVE me some Bubbuh Barr!
He puts Georgia in play, I think, if he wins the Libber nomination.

That'd be funny as hell if the only state in the old Confederacy to go to Obama would be GA.
