"The Capitol"
Two-Hour Feature Documentary Memorial Day Weekend on C-SPAN A Special Programming Alert for our Book TV Viewers
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Capitol Memorial Day Weekend on C-SPAN
Sunday, May 25: 9 pm ET
Monday, May 26: 3, 8 and 11 pm ET
Join us on C-SPAN over the Memorial Day weekend for a special presentation of our feature documentary The Capitol -- exploring the history, art, and architecture of the U.S. Capitol from its opening in 1800 through today. From its grand public spaces to those places where tourists cannot go, the program captures the beauty and history of this iconic building through a combination of tours and personal stories about the Capitol from members of Congress, historians, and curators.
Granted unique and unprecedented access to its spaces inside, C-SPAN's The Capitol is the only full-length television documentary ever done on this historic structure that is home to the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.
Videotaped in high-definition, this special two-hour version of The Capitol, originally produced for Video On Demand viewing, is airing on the C-SPAN networks for the first time ever.
For more information on this program, as well as other resources on the history of the U.S. Capitol, visit our website www.the-capitol.org.
4. "Causes Won, Lost & Forgotten," Gary Gallagher
This was a really good program, and fun to listen to. It was given by Gary Gallagher, a Professor at the University of Virginia I think, and Civil War scholar, before a library audience in California. (This Gary Gallagher is really good, very intelligent and perceptive, funny, and easy to listen to. I remember a long C-SPAN program a few years ago, it might have been one of those "In Depth" things, with call-in, on the Civil War, battlefield tour video clips, etc., really good.)
This program was on the Hollywood movie treatment of the Civil War, (usually ignorant, wrong, trashy, etc., of course), and the earlier issue of the four usual approaches to telling the meaning of the Civil War: 1) the Union, the saving of the great democracy, fighting to preserve our Nation and Constitution as the Founders intended; 2) the Lost Cause, the noble fighting and tragic loss to the South of what they had known, a war they could never have won, but which they gave their lives to; 3) Reconciliation, the goodness and bravery of soldiers on both sides of the conflict, and how we are all Americans again after the War; 4) Emancipation, the freeing of the slaves and the emergence of America as the true promise that it always claimed but never before gave.
Many movies were referred to, and how they shaped the story of the "Civil War era" according to social opinion, and things that were going on, at the time of the making of the movie, not as according to real Civil War era thought. The Union cause has almost completely vanished as a telling of the story, where that was the single most important cause impelling Northerners to join the war at the time (and for a couple of generations more), and the freeing-the-slaves narrative as the sole meaning, now just about the only way it is told, is a very modern, post Civil Rights era, telling. The odd thing, disturbing to me, is the way Union soldiers themselves have become so villified, characatured as crude, violent, with no real ethics or ideals. It doesn't make any sense that as the Union cause becomes the norm, the soldiers have become so hated; like a part of a modern "anti-war" sentiment.
This seems like a really well-researched book, yet again from Gary Gallagher, and the C-SPAN program was a lot of fun, interesting, and informative. Hollywood really does not care anymore, and only did periodically before (Douglass Fairbanks, Sr. was always historically accurate, for example).
