Why are so many people misspelling "protester" lately?
I was beginning to think *I* was wrong, so I looked it up:

3. The one that drives me nuts is LOSE
as in the opposite of WIN. Versus LOOSE as in the opposite of TIGHT.

22. Saw the thread, and this mistake immediately came to mind
My students are constantly making this mistake and it infuriates me. It is a basic word and not hard to type...

I've NEVER seen it until recently, and it strikes me as wrong for that reason. Maybe this is some kind of weird regional thing. :shrug:

11. NO protestor
is a noun for one who protests...please look it up. Both spellings are correct but Protestor gives more emphasis to the individual.

19. Frequencies can explain your qualms.
Google both forms.

"Protester", 6.2 million hits; "protestor", 460k. One's more than ten times more common. I can't help but wonder if there's a geographic bias, as well.

I figure it's the same with "advisor" vs. "adviser".

At least "insure" and "ensure" seem to have finally paired spellings with meanings, at least in the US. But I could be wrong.

The claim that the -or form accentuates the individual more is just ... well ... silly.

21. Speaking of which, I haven't been able to get DU's spellcheck to work for me the last day or so.
