54. Replaying that video. Lots of strong winds, windborn debris.
Those poor pigs. I remember a line from my childhood tornado that a boy was brought to the emergency room with a picket fence through his chest. Yes, he died, as did several others in his family when their lightly built house was blown to bits, along with the rest of the neighborhood.

23. It has been crazy
here the last few days. That was great to watch, for the first time in a long long time CNN is on my TV and it is actually showing something interesting and they can't spin this (pretty much spins itself).

I guess this should put to rest why it is not good to hide in an underpass or stay in your car.

Included at first link is a list of communities that have been tornadoed. I hate winds. Hope you and yours stay safe.

An eastbound car on Interstate Highway 70 was picked up by a twister and carried 90 feet across the highway and dropped in a drainage ditch with 18 inches to three feet of water. The driver, a man, suffered a punctured lung, Lies said.

http://www.kwch.com/Global/story.asp?S=8375250&nav=menu486_2_1
Eyewitness News has confirmed a man and woman from Colorado have been found dead in a field west of the town of Cunningham. They were a young couple from headed to eastern Kansas to visit family. The car was picked up by a tornado and thrown about 150 yards from the highway into a wheat field. The field is north of a rest area on U.S. Highway 54 between Pratt and Cunningham.

Map of the Area

The driver remained inside the vehicle and the woman was ejected when the vehicle was hit. Pratt County Sheriff Vernon Chinn says emergency crews had been in the area last night looking for damage, but he said the car was too far out in the field for them to see even with spotlights.

31. Exactly!
I lived through this one http://www.tinyvital.com/Weather/StormChase/topeka66.htm and learned to respect the storms but I still am excited by them.

We have been really easy here in the NE section of the state. In the basement only a couple of times.

I know I have posted this before but it is so beautiful. This was taken from one of my pastures several years ago.

I lived there for four years. It's been weird to hear Mason Dunn, the pilot, talking to Gary England, the chief meteorologist, again.

Hope everyone stays safe. Seeing the pig farm torn apart by the tornado a little while ago was heartbreaking.

Edited on Sat May-24-08 03:58 PM by uppityperson
Is that because it is closer to the ground and the upward wind doesn't have so far to go?

Incredible! there is another funnel forming.

49. People standing in the back of pickups with cameras in a thunderstorm/tornado area?
Doesn't seem like a very bright thing to do. Amateur tornado chasers, told to stay out of the way, don't clog up the roads, and don't stand in the back of a pickup since there is lightening happening.
