Poll question: Would you be in favor of a Communications forum on DU? Topics: clearness, etiquette, logic

One could link to a post anywhere on DU and analyze it in the Communications forum.

1. analysis is everywhere

now if the intent were to assist an individual's personal comptencies as a communicator, i'd be all for it. three competencies are essential for people in our culture, literacy, numeracy, oracy. literacy, reading, writing; numeracy, crunching numbers and operating computers; oracy, speaking and listening. these, for me, should be the focus of any endeavor titled "communication".

2. It would be a forum.

An individual looking for help might find it there, just as people go to the Computer Help and Support forum for help. There's no magic wand that DU can wave to control intent. Of course, you would be free to spend time in the new DU Communications forum reading posts and hitting alert when you see something that you think violates at least one DU rule.

I agree, though, a lot of people around here do need some training in such subjects as logic, civility, and clarity.

Lately, lots of people here seem to think that simply posting in caps and saying 'fuck' a lot is all that it needed to communicate effectively.

That particular rule seems to be pretty strictly enforced, the ones on personal attacks and flamebait, not so much.

an actual excerpt from the official DU rules or are you referring to your own assumptions about motivations of Moderators who locked some specific threads?

If GWB were a DU member, I'm sure that there would be a variety of different unofficial names and descriptions that would identify GWB without using his official DU username.

Something similar to what you propose that would be helpful would be a forum where people can post letters to the editor they plan to send and get some feedback.

That would be very useful, and fun, too.

17. Using the forum to get feedback on drafts of letters-to-the-editor is a good idea.

If new threads in the Communications forum didn't show up on the Latest Threads page, then perhaps it would also be possible to post drafts of future Original Posts for GD. Perhaps the author of a draft is ready and willing to improve, but needs help improving it to make it suitable for the bigger audience of GD.

5. This is a Great Idea

I love this idea and hope that it will catch on. I have noticed that over the course of my time here on DU, that my own writing has improved immeasurably from what it was when I first got here generally. My thinking is much calmer and less panicky at the thought of being attacked, I don't post unless I can think of sources for my factual claims, etc., I think up background expanantions or supporting evidence as it applies, I try to keep my "pissed-off" attitudes under control a little better so it doesn't undercut and lose my actual argument, etc., so I think the whole subject of posting so that it improves your own clarity of thinking and expression is a real one, and very beneficial.

I have also noticed that sometimes, I agree with someone on DU who is getting hammered, but who is not expressing what I think the arguments are for that side of an issue very well. I think if there were somewhere to go other than "the fight" itself, to go over things and clear them up, it would help all of us Democrats, etc., as we just talk about issues wherever we are, online or not. Learning how to settle down while debating, and not just get upset, anxious, angry, etc., but keep your mind on your train of thought, is a great skill, and has to be learned, and helped along by others. It could be like a philosophy/current events/logic forum, helping each one get better at putting an argument together and telling it. I like it.

6. I would like it so that I could seek objective help online when writing

professional documents. I'm extremely dyslexic and I do odd things sometimes with sentence structure and substituting words that sound like what I intended,but have very different meanings.

when I linked to my own post, you'll pardon the expression, post-facto. I was trying to make a point, a meta-post as it were, and got locked and chastised.

I rarely get mixed up, and tend to remember stuff, so maybe I could help you. I'm pretty good when it comes to plain stuff, get involved when it comes to emotions...x(
