LOS ANGELES — Sydney Pollack, a Hollywood mainstay as director, producer and sometime actor whose star-laden movies like “The Way We Were,” “Tootsie” and “Out of Africa” were among the most successful of the 1970s and ’80s, died on Monday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 73.

1. So sad -- he was the leader for "Recount"
and then he had to bow out -- now we know why.

He was superb, just the right instincts for our time.

Not only a great producer/director, but actor as well.

14. When Bill Murray says to Dustin Hoffman: "You slut"
it almost takes me off the couch. One of the funniest movie scenes ever.

RIP Sydney.

16. As is the scene where Dustin Hoffman, dressed as Dorothy......
.... goes and sits at Sydney Pollack's table at the Russian Tea Room. Pure classic comic bliss.

21. What an incredible experience. It needed no words.
How heart-tugging. Especially knowing what was to come.

Not trying to diminish the experience, but I wore contacts for years. They'd dry out, and to lubricate them I'd conjure up something that brought tears to my eyes. This movie never failed. (The other one was "The Natural" - Redford again - with the batboy bringing him the bat they'd carved together.) I'm a wimp, but proud to be.

13. Not only was he a great movie director
but a great actor too. Did anyone see the bit part he had on the Sopranos? Very memorable, also he played Will's father on Will & Grace. He even acted in the movies he directed, anyone remember his role in Tootsie, I think he was Dustin Hoffmans agent.

15. I was a huge fan, vankuria. Talk about people you'd like to have a beer with.
I don't even like beer, but I'd make an exception in SP's case. He just seemed to be the kind of guy that you'd love to hang out with and shoot the breeze.

Can't believe he's gone.

25. Indiana slips up sometimes when it gives the world a Dan Quayle, but
there was no slip up at all when it gave us Mr. Pollack.

He was born in the same Hoosier city where Karen Black went to high school.

Rest in peace, Sydney. You'll be missed.

26. Sydney Pollack spoke at my son's graduation from
The Colorado College. I believe one of his daughters was in the class of 1990.

He told the graduates not to be afraid of "wandering".

He was a fine man and I loved his movies.
