<snip>

LOS ANGELES - Dick Martin, the zany half of the comedy team whose “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In” took television by storm in the 1960s, making stars of Goldie Hawn and Lily Tomlin and creating such national catch-phrases as “Sock it to me!” has died. He was 86.

Stars such as John Wayne and Kirk Douglas were delighted to make brief appearances, and even Richard Nixon, running for president in 1968, dropped in to shout a befuddled sounding, “Sock it to me!” His opponent, Vice President Hubert Humphrey, was offered equal time but declined because his handlers thought it would appear undignified.

Rowan and Martin landed the show just as their comedy partnership was approaching its zenith and the nation’s counterculture was expanding into the mainstream.

2. 86 is a nice long life. I bet his good humor helped him live long.
That was a great show.

He was a great goof! Very funny.

RIP.

3. As a kid, I wanted to watch Rowan and Martin so badly
but my mother wouldn't let me, because it wasn't a good "role model" for little kids. But I think the main reason was she didn't want me reciting R&M catch-phrases like "Sock it to me" and "Vely intelesting" when I went to visit my grandparents.

RIP, Dick Martin.

4. Same here, it was a treat when the baby sitter came and let us watch!
He will be missed.

Does anyone know a place online where we can view the old Laugh-In clips?

15. The only time I got to watch it
was when I spent the night at a friend's house. And I never could understand why it was "forbidden fruit" at my house, but not at my friend's house.

12. I was a teenager so I got to watch
But my sister couldn't.

It was pretty irreverent for its time. Definitely not a kids show. Of course, today it seems mild.

14. Rowan and Martin and Peyton Place were the "scandalous" shows
in my home back then. Definitely on the "verboten" list for little kids. As was the movie "Valley of the Dolls".

17. I recall watching it all the time as a kid - I was 4 when it first
hit the air, and can only remember the shows starting from the age of 6 or so, but I guess having progressive-minded parents really made a difference as far as this kind of thing goes!

They let me watch "All In The Family" all of the time as well, just because they were such big fans of that too!

18. We watched "All in the Family" too
But I think that was because Archie was such a right-winger and was therefore on my grandparents' approved list.

9. God, I loved that show

Non-stop corny jokes, fast moving graphics, great skits, HILARIOUS regular characters (Goldie Hawn, Artie Shaw, Joanne Worley, Lili Tomlin).

It was irreverant, silly and totally addictive for a 12 year old yearning for something FUN to watch.

Good Night, Dick.

You were a blast.

...during its reairs on Nick at Nite in the 80s.

I LOVED this show.

Just Damn.

If I could point to just one thing from my childhood that helped develop my sense of satire and humor, it would be this show.

Damn.
