Homework, no home. homeless schoolchildren
Homework, no home
By Donna Winchester
Published March 4, 2007

They fly under the radar in places few would think to look. At night, they lay their heads down in abandoned automobiles, in motel rooms, in spare corners in the homes of relatives. They are the estimated 1,500 children who are homeless yet enrolled in a Pinellas County public school. Thousands of others can be found in Hillsborough and Pasco schools, and in school districts across the state.

Curtis Reitmeyer is one of them. The 10-year-old will tell you the best hours of his day are the ones he spends at Skycrest Elementary School in Clearwater. The rest of the time, he's cooped up in a cramped motel room with his mom and dad, his older brother and two younger sisters.

Curtis says that sharing a bed with another family member makes it hard for him to fall asleep. Traffic along U.S. 19 and arguments among other motel dwellers sometimes wake him in the middle of the night.

And the utter disarray that results when six people spend months together in a small space makes it hard to keep track of things. Curtis says he missed a day of school recently because he couldn't find one of his shoes.

"At our apartment, they were always right next to each other," he says.

1. America has no shame.
We all know that the conditions that create homelessness apply to families with children. The concept that a family with kids could spend more than 2 nights without a home is insane.

Why does the congress support money for a war when we have children sleeping in cars?

2. contrary to the fairey tale we're supposed to believe, america does not love its children
i'm hoping that soon the citizenry of this country will finally see that the system is set up to benefit the haves and to screw the have-nots.

3. You're right on
And in some areas, like suburban DC, the majority of the homeless are families with children, whose parents are working. They just can't afford the astronomical rents.

4. These children will have lasting academic, social and
psychological problems. I will NOT accept that this country can't do a better job providing safety nets, especially for children.

9. And if you ask the RWers abt these scenarios, you'll hear how they
brought it on themselves, how if they would just work hard enough they could get out of that situation.

7. PLEASE! All of you--Call 1-866-338-1015, keep talking to Senators and Reps
and ask-- no, DEMAND--that low-income housing be fully funded!

Please, I'm begging here..... There are more cuts to HUD scheduled, and if we just complain that it's the RW, but don't do anything, the cuts will continue, and it will be more homeless children.

PLEASE CALL!

Thank you!

12. Successful HUD Programs/Pilots?
Any strong success stories to point out when calling?

Having a clipping about a program that has worked is very effective at expanding a specific line item.

20. It's all so underfunded-- Just beg for Section 8 to be fully funded!
So many HUD buildings have been torn down and not replaced. There are so many people now who need Section 8, and either the waiting lists are years long (!Yes, literally!), or they've closed down the waiting lists because they're so long!

I don't know that there are any "programs". What is vulnerable is the vouchers. That is cut first.

There's just a huge, crying need for more Section 8 housing. And, not just for elderly folks, but for all who fit the financial criteria!

Thanks for your effort! I really appreciate this. I feel so alone in the whole housing struggle. :(

10. i try not to think
about how close my 14-year-old son and i are to being in the same boat. at this point in time i must work two weeks straight just to pay the rent. we already don't have a car...life is tough, and it's discouraging, because i just know deep down inside that nature made this planet to support all of the life upon it. but greedy warmongers just won't have that. :(

14. Hope things get better for you soon
My landlord was ready to boot me until I got cancer,so I can appreciate the constant stress of wondering if you're going to have a place to live the next day.I was looking into shelters but they were all full already :(

Not having a vehicle totally sucks, but I am lucky because we have an excellent bus service here, and a lot of things are within walking distance for me.For anyone in rural areas though it must be really tough to get even the basics one needs.

And it's always fun choosing between meds or food,or do I feed myself or my cat?

I wish I could offer more than words for support.

11. This is a sad business.
We need to get back the welfare safety nets that we had before. At least a family with children could get an apartment and food stamps without a lot of red tape. Now the welfare to work legislation has left these families at risk. You'd think people would care about the children if nothing else, but they don't. All they can see is parents who don't work and are living on the dole, even if it isn't their fault that they have fallen on hard times. It's even worse if the parents do work but can't earn enough to shelter their families. It's disgusting.

24. See, this is just another example of why I wish that wealthy, influential
liberals and Dems would get off their asses and start buying radio stations. Really! We HAVE to start building our OWN noise machine The more powerful a network WE can build, the easier it will be to outshout the bad guys and take over the airwaves, reach a lot more people with a message that a lot of them just never, ever get to hear (and that might change a few minds, hearts, AND votes), and influence policy for the better. The bad guys and cheapskates and Dark Siders have had the biggest and most powerful microphones to themselves FOR YEARS now. Their monopoly MUST be dismantled. Many people don't know our side of the argument simply because there's no place where it's presented to them. If all they watch is Pox Noise, they're going to keep on thinking that we're winning in Iraq, things are going "swimmingly" - as coultergeist would say - in Afghanistan, that Saddam had WMDs (which have been found) and that he was in bed with al Qaeda to perpetrate 9/11. Even now, according to the latest observations by such outfits as Editor & Publisher (there's a thread about this elsewhere, I saw it on the home page) that have noted how much coverage and information Pox Noise viewers are getting about the Walter Reed scandal. Next to NONE. Instead, they're getting saturated with Anna Nicole Smith. People will remain ill-informed as long as the information brokers have personal, myopic, self-satisfying agendas and only present one side of the story.

It's the only way to yank some of our "public servants" back to attention. Remember how nobody knew about contradicta's 5th Avenue shoe-shopping spree while thousands of her fellow citizens were drowning in New Orleans - as I can clearly recall reading: "the bloggers chased her back to Washington" to - um - er - GET THE FUCK BACK TO WORK BECAUSE WE'RE IN THE MIDST OF A NATIONAL EMERGENCY AND WE AIN'T PAYING YOUR ARROGANT, INCOMPETENT ASS TO GO SHOPPING AND GALAVANTING ALL OVER MANHATTAN WHEN YOU HAVE SERIOUS, URGENT WORK TO DO. The news media didn't lead with that. Alternative media did. The news media didn't jump on ann coulter's latest disgrace until the guerrilla media had been all over it for a whole day. The mainstreamers should have had it first, and been all over it like a cheap suit. The mainstream needs to be rebuilt so this stuff gets exposed. And so people like contradicta and ann coulter and these jackasses running Walter Reed and the rest of 'em GET EXPOSED, AND SHAMED. They need to be made to look bad, and the only way you can do that with any force or clout is to have it all over the mainstream media, with the biggest bully pulpits and the loudest microphones. I mean, I saw a clip of brit hume thoughtfully proving my point. I guess he was on the Pox Noise Sunday talk show and his main complaint about the Walter Reed disgrace was that it threatened to make the White House look bad.

Well, so be it. If cosmetics are your thing, then so be it. They need to look bad. Accordingly, they need to be made to look REALLY bad on such emergency-priority, GENUINE "culture of life" issues like poverty, homelessness and hunger - things that REALLY affect ever-expanding numbers of people painfully and harshly EVERY DAY. EVERY DAY!!! And it needs to be a nationwide campaign, EVERYWHERE. Since something goes farther and speaks louder if it's on TV or radio than if it's in newspapers or magazines, then the airwaves are it. We need to take back the airwaves, and get this message out there on a grand scale, and, indeed, SHAME our so-called "leaders" who have allowed this shit to happen. Anybody who saw any part of those hearings yesterday in which these big-ass, hotshot generals, kiley and weightman, squirmed and sweated and hemmed and hawed in their seats in front of a bank of paparrazzi crouched on the floor inches away from their table, with cameras full-on them in close-ups and medium shots, and the lights in their faces, while being jackhammered with questions about their negligence will agree. Especially in THIS day and age when there are so dismally few real consequences of any significance when someone does wrong, dragging them in front of the cameras and mikes at public hearings and putting them on the hot seat is about all we have. And there are HUNDREDS of people, maybe THOUSANDS, in Washington, starting from the very top, who deserve this shaming treatment for THEIR negligence on the poverty and homelessness issue.

And there ought to be somebody banging a VERY large, VERY loud drum out there all the time, reminding people that THIS, TOO, IS HOMELAND SECURITY, FOLKS.

26. only in America...food insecurity is a major problem
several programs exist to help kids who don't have food in their homes.
http://www.kwch.com/Global/story.asp?s=5562215
-snip-
Some kids look forward to the weekend. For others, the weekends are a time when they go hungry.

The hot meals at school can be the only filling meals that some children get.

That's why the Kansas Food Bank started a program called Food 4 Kids. Food 4 Kids was established for students who are "food insecure" and who are not getting sufficient food outside of school on a regular basis.

The idea is to send these children home with a backpack full of nutritious pre-assembled bags of food on Friday each week.

...in AMERICA.

28. This part just floored me:
"Nationally, more than 900,000 children in kindergarten through 12th grade were identified as homeless last year. That's up 50 percent from the 2003-04 school year."

50%!!!!!!!

Just devstating-we can fund a war, but can't make sure OUR kids have a place to call their own.
