Speaking of losing it...
There is something bizarre about the trends on this site.

People rant about lack of news coverage on "real news" - and then they rant, and rant, and rant about use of politically incorrect words. They rant about the coultergeist, and whether pigs have wings.

Contrast the responses to a thread about a brutal murderer about to be executed to one about a kid from the bronx whose family kicked him out of his home, who ended living in homeless shelters in Cicero, Il. managed to finish high school, joined the army, and got blown to bits a couple of weeks ago.

I get depressed watching/reading the news, come here to find soulmates... but I am starting to find this site every bit as depressing in its own way.

Ok, the brutal murderer got a head start of 10 hours - but it continues to be a much more popular topic.

Hell, the "awwww" picture of tiger cubs and oragutans gets more traffic.

Don't get me wrong - people can fixate on whatever they want - it is just depressing.

1. Chill out?

DU is a community made up of all sorts of folks. If you have a particular interest, you can go to a Forum on that topic.

Or you can go someplace else entirely.

I find many like-minded folks here, and many with whom I disagree. Like Real Life in general, huh?

You get what you look for......

Edited to add;
Calling attention to the plight of animals is important to me and to many DUers, so yes, I enjoyed the baby animal story and the fact that it called attention to tigers and urangutans. :)

3. you're right, of course

I should apologize for being politically incorrect in suggesting the lack of attention to the needless death of a kid who had gone so far despite the odds was depressing. I should "chill out."

I, too, appreciated the baby animal pic, and sent links to several friends and family.

I should not have implied that lack of interest in the kid's death in any way made anyone less of a person. Everyone is equal, entitled to identical rights, identical attention, identical nomenclature...

oh, wait. the dead kid is not entitled to attention. Hell there are 3500 of THEM. Why get excited about one more?

I should go somewhere else.

Well, on that last, I guess I agree with you.

2. I've always said that I'm totally mystified by some of the threads that
get shitloads of responses, and others that one would seem to think were vital for us all to know about and discuss get very few. But then I've noticed that I sometimes read some very heavy and posts and find that either I'm too burnt out on all the bad news to comment, someone has said what I would have said, or more often I need to think about it for a while.

But I still do wonder at times why there's a hundred responses to a cat's picture, and only one or two to the impending execution of a person who just might possibly be innocent.

Go figure.
