I think the GOP is getting depressed about McCain (surfing AM Radio)
I never turned my radio to AM until DU introduced me to Rachel Maddow so now I try to find her show when I'm in the car in the evening. So it's DU's fault I listened to right-wing radio tonight!

Anyway, tonight the car radio was already on AM and I did a bit of surfing to hear what's out there. I picked up two things between errands that made me smile.

Lars Larsson (sp?) Show - figured out from context he's a conservative. His beef seemed to be McCain's amnesty for illegal immigrants, and then how he backed off due to political opposition, but would probably push it again once he got in the White House. Telling a caller "Is that how he's going to treat conservatives?! ... My vote is worth something, and I don't want to just vote for the least of 3 evils". Saying it would be really hard to vote for McCain and, "what do we do, make bumper stickers that say the least of 3 evils?!"

Newtrich on an unknown show, being asked about Bob Barr's candidacy. His answer - conservatives will need to think about the Supreme Court and taxes and vote for McCain, because it's will be "better to fight McCain 20% of the time than fight Obama" 90% of the time. I can't remember the exact percentage he gave for Obama but I know it was 20% for McCain and 80/90/100 for Obama.

They are not happy campers! :7

2. There is likely to be a mass defection to Barr
so they have a reason to be depressed.

This could very easily be the year to finish them off.

3. that awkward coalition may be splintering
Maybe they realize BushCo didn't help the religious right much, totally failed fiscal conservatives, and couldn't even do the neocon agenda properly. Let's hope many vote for Barr or just stay home in disgust.

6. see, johnny....
....you've got problems....

"His beef seemed to be McCain's amnesty for illegal immigrants,..."

....allow me to help....what you need to do is to reestablish your bonafides with your base....you need to throw your fellow repugs some meat....

....stop pussy-footing around with immigration....wake up early tomorrow from your nap and sponsor a new bill that would make all illegal border crossings a capital crime....

....think about it johnny, if you execute all illegal immigrants you'll solve the revolving-door problem, take pressure off the job market of your base and possibly eliminate a few terrorists in the process....

....you will no longer need to invade Iran or remain in Iraq to satisfy their blood-lust....go for it johnny, this could be a win, win, win....

8. I get the impression Lars wanted Tancredo or Hunter
While I take some joy in their misfortune, I am given pause by 3 things:

1) To be a radio host, and to entertain (which in this context means delight or piss off people enough to make them want to listen), you have to be an on-air extremist. The fact that RW extremists don't think McCain is tough enough reinforces the image that the man is really a moderate. The truth, as we all know, is that he'll be Bush III.

2) The "Ron Paul Revolution" will lose the battle, but they are liable win the war. Assume for a moment that current trends hold and the GOP endures an electoral bloodbath. I'm going to bet that the Ron Paul crowd will be the ones to step up and take control of the party. The result will be new, younger, energized Republican party focused on a) shifting the tax burden much more heavily to the middle and lower classes through a "fair tax" that will largely leave the incomes of the super-wealthy alone, and b) destroying as much of the regulatory authority of the federal government and social safety net as they can get away with. They'll de-emphasize the world leader and family values emphasis, and push individual freedom, get government off the backs of small business, repeal income tax, defend the borders, and ship back the illegals.

3) I agree they are miserable over on righty radio, but let's look in the mirror. Our party, too, is likely headed toward a day-of-reckoning. Seen GDP lately?

9. As I said, don't listen much so I don't know how much misfortune.
I wonder if Barr and Paul pull off enough votes - could end up helping us. I think I prefer libertarians to neocons (I realize Paul is not a libertarain when it comes to stuff like abortion).

GDP and the party is a mess but I don't see it cracking into different ideological lines like the GOP. Guess we'll see.
