John McCain Using "Vets For Freedom" Talking Points To Attack Obama
Edited on Thu May-29-08 09:52 AM by kpete
No one involved with the McCain campaign is allowed to participate in a 527 or other independent entity.

YET:
Vets for Freedom put out its first advertisement last Friday, featuring an Iraq war veteran saying:

Mr. Obama "hasn’t once sat down one on one with our commander in Iraq, General Petraeus," adding: "Worse, he hasn’t been to Iraq in two-and-a-half years. He’s unwilling to get the facts on Iraq, yet he’s willing to travel to Iran to meet their leader, or anyone else who hates our country." The veterans group’s latest commercial continued on the same theme.

Now gee, why does that sound eerily familiar?

So I did some checking to make sure I wasn't putting any carts in front of horses, and fairly quickly found a McNews USA Today blog entry:

The Associated Press -- McCain likes idea of traveling to Iraq with Obama: After criticizing Democratic opponent Sen. Barack Obama for not having been to Iraq since 2006, Republican presidential contender Sen. John McCain on Monday endorsed the idea of a trip together to the war zone. In an interview with the AP, McCain said such a trip "would be fine" and that he would "seize that opportunity to educate Senator Obama along the way." Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, a McCain supporter, brought up the idea over the weekend. McCain has been to Iraq about every six months since the war there began in March 2003. Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said that the Democratic candidate "thinks Memorial Day is a day to honor our nation's veterans, not a day for political posturing." McCain supports the troop "surge" and has opposed calls to start bringing U.S. forces home. Obama says he would immediately start withdrawing troops if he becomes president.

You get that? Didja?

The Vets for Freedom ad came out on Friday.

Lindsey Graham --still affiliated with Vets for Freedom-- brings it up Saturday.

John McCain picks up the bucket on Monday,
and has been sloshing the damn water all over the news every day since then. Yesterday McCain was quoted as saying:

"Now, why is it that Senator Obama wants to sit down with the President of Iran, but hasn’t yet sat down with General Petraeus – the leader of our troops in Iraq?

Now let's back it up and compare that to the text from the Vets for Freedom web ad:

Mr. Obama "hasn’t once sat down one on one with our commander in Iraq, General Petraeus," adding: "Worse, he hasn’t been to Iraq in two-and-a-half years. He’s unwilling to get the facts on Iraq, yet he’s willing to travel to Iran to meet their leader, or anyone else who hates our country."
