Costco Q3 earnings top estimates!
http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/stories/2008/05/26/daily58.html?f=et50&ana=e_du

$295.1 million, or 67 cents per share; up from $224 million, or 49 cents per share a year earlier.

Net sales increased to $16.26 billion from $14.34 billion in 2007.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial Network expected third-quarter earnings of 65 cents per share and sales of $16.35 billion.

The Issaquah, Wash.-based retailer (NASDAQ: COST) reported third-quarter comparable-store sales increased 8 percent over the same time last year. Costco officials attributed the higher price for gasoline -- up 20 percent year-over-year for the quarter -- and strong foreign exchange rates, specifically in Canada, for the increase.

I'm GLAD to see a BLUE RETAILER is ding well! Of course I'm sure it's tied to people trying to save a little money!

1. I'm not surprised
I've seen a lot of people in there with full carts, mostly bulk foods and the containers to store them in.

People are trying to save money any way they can, even cleaining out all the skinny clothes from the spare closet so they can store the huge packs of TP and towels.

3. I went into a Costco for the first time, ever, last week.
I went with a friend who is kinda down on her luck. It was her idea.

I spent a few hundred dollars, too. The prices were great, and the quality was much better than I expected.

But the best part was the time I spent talking to this beautiful woman who was manning the entrance. She was in a wheelchair and somewhat brain-damaged as a result of a bad auto crash. One of the most wonderful people I have encountered in years.

I am going to go back there just to talk to her.

4. What, you can be a good corporate citizen and do well financially, too?
Of course you can.

It's called good management that is held responsible.

Something we see little of today. Congrats, Costco.
