Poll: GOP Senate Incumbent Trailing In Mississippi
By Eric Kleefeld - May 29, 2008, 12:44PM
In yet another indication that Senate Republicans are really playing on defense everywhere this year, a new Rasmussen poll has bad news for them in even the deep-red state of Mississippi, with appointed Sen. Roger Wicker (R) now trailing former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove (D) in a race that's within the margin of error:

Musgrove (D) 47%
Wicker (R) 46%
Sample size: 500 likely voters.
Margin of error: ±4%

As we noted a few days ago, Wicker is already up on the air -- having to introduce himself to voters in a state that President Bush carried with 60% of the vote in 2004.

If the Dems were to manage to knock off a GOP Senator in the Deep South, it really would be a massive victory.

1. A lot of skeletons will be hastily reburyed.
Deeper, with more quicklime. Because that would signal a setback to the Republican party in November that might well prove irreparable in any time frame that would allow them to sustain as an actual party.

This represents the repudiation of Reaganism because the wide stance party is a cult of Raygun personality. Now we need to purge the last of it from our party as well.

2. The GOP is going to have to defend seats they never envisioned defending in 2004
This is partly a tribute to the sucess of the 50-state strategy and the blowback of years of failed Republican policies. They'll have to burn money to defend Mississippi and Nebraska and othe traditional red-state safe seats.

It's too soon to count the proverbial chickens, but this has the potential to be the mirror image of 1980.

4. I met Ronnie back when he was running for Attorney General
He impressed me then among the five or so candidates for the position. I thought that if Mississippi was ever again going to have a Democratic governor or Senator, it would be Musgrove. He's a conservative (but as liberal as a white politican in Mississippi will ever get), and has a real presence as a politician. I pick him to beat Wicker, who comes across as a slippery used car salesman.

5. Oh, I hope you're right! I have allowed myself to begin to believe
just a LITTLE...that we Mississippians are capable of actually voting in our own best interests. Musgrove was a better governor than he got credit for being, and I wish him well and will work for him here in south MS as much as is possible.
