My single biggest life lesson was the day I realized that I was not the world's cop
and that the only words and deeds I could control were my own.

It was quite a great relief, really. Operative word here is "control".

I'm sure this seemed relevant to something when I began this post. ;-)

1. I remember when I figured out that everything dies
the horror...the horror...
I was like 7 or 8...

3. Right. That moment of recognizing mortality. I remember that too
And I think that I too was around 7 or 8. I recall lying in bed and just rubbing my thumb and forefinger together and thinking "I exist! And someday I won't . . ."

4. That's interesting...
...because my girls (ages 7,8) are going through a stage where they ask questions
about death. We recently had a cat die. They are full of questions.

I'm not sure what happens when we die, but I talk to them about the possibility of
an afterlife, and even heaven. It seems to help them digest the reality.

It's hard not to give them that soft landing. It seems like a lot for a 2nd grader
to deal with.

6. I aways knew I would die
but it was just abstract, never existed as a concrete reality until I was about 15 or so. I tell you, being an atheist is not fun. It's scary as hell and I would believe in reincarnation if I could but I can't.
