Thank you to whomever posted Hypermiling thread - Worked for me
I've been trying it this past week. I improved my mpg this week from 22 to 26 mpg on my 2003 Pontiac Vibe. This was a combination of city and a bit of highway driving. My normal weekly commute to and from work. I knew it was working when I didn't have to fill up till 240+ miles on trip odometer instead of the usual 220+. And I only needed slightly over 9 gallons when I'm usually putting in 10.

I'm going to keep it up! And I'm going to pass this around at work.

1. I had to relearn how to drive when I got my hybrid.

I was tickled with the mileage I was getting and then I met a guy who had the same vehicle I did, and he was getting 5-10 mpg better.

Cities with stoplights everywhere are terrible. We have stoplights every 0.1 miles or even 0.05 miles, but have a 40 mph speed limit. So every time the light changes you floor it to make it through the next light.

I've learned alternate routes that let me coast at 55mph instead of having to take our interstate at 75 mph.

All of those techniques helped when I had a rental car last week. I barely used any gas and I drove all over the place.

2. I didn't know what it was called until I read it here,
but I've been doing it for a while.

I have an on-board gas economy computer, which brings it home in a big way when you accelerate from a stop light.

I usually drive home after midnight (we own our own business, so my hours start late and end late) so no one else is on the road as I coast to the next light so I don't have to stop and start again.

I get good mileage anyway, but diesel is so expensive, I'm trying to eke out a little more, and I'm getting two-three miles per gallon more with my hypermiling.

4. Gas economy computer - every car should come equipped with one
Edited on Fri May-30-08 11:33 AM by RamboLiberal
I had one that came installed in my 88 Olds Cutlass - it was touring model. I loved it. It did other things too like give you ETA if you put in your trip mileage. Told me when oil change was needed, etc.

Always wished my subsequent cars came equipped with one. I know I could get one installed but never did. I may look in to it in my next vehicle.

3. That would be me. Yer welcome.
Overall I'm getting a shade over 48 mpg in my Prius.
I burn the most gas getting up to speed.
Once there I can maintain consistently above 50 mpg.
Leaving on a 1500 mile road trip Tuesday.
I'll keep y'all posted.

5. As my driving teacher told me wayyy back, pretend you have an egg under your ft.
Drive lightly and gently. Take your time and relax.

6. I've been able to boost my Prius' mpg
from about 48 to about 50. But I'm still learning hypermiling.

I can get 55+ on my way to work in the morning because it's generally downhill. The trick is to keep my cumulative MPG from going down too much on the drive home.
