Poll question: What Terrorist Supporting clothing should be banned?
Edited on Fri May-30-08 12:59 PM by uppityperson
Terrorists dress themselves in a distinctive fashion. Pants. Shirts. Shoes. Sometimes a skirt or even, gasp, socks! So, what should be banned from advertisements so as to not give offense that some idiot might think a company Supports Terrorism (tm)?

Edited to add, results of this straw poll will be forwarded to Dunkin' Donuts.

Re-edited to add the pseudo-patriotic crap choice after 2 votes for other.

3. Flag lapel pins?

1. Some wear them for the right reason.
2. Some have co-opted them for the wrong reason.
3. Some wear them in fear of not looking patriotic enough for group #2

14. That came to my mind first as well.
Most of the people responsible for the growth of terrorism in the world today seem to wear flag lapel pins. And if you don't wear one, you're accused of being unpatriotic!

30. We're still waiting for an answer to this
What possible reason would you have for wearing a flag in your lapel? In case you're shot down behind enemy lines? In case you forget where you live?

I've never figured this one out. On the other hand, I could never figure out why anyone flies their flag in their own country -- other than on a public building.

42. The Flag Code says there isn't one... unless you're the family of a soldier
Edited on Fri May-30-08 01:53 PM by Clark2008
180 (US Flag Code). Design for service lapel button; persons entitled to wear button The Secretary of Defense is also authorized and directed to approve a design for a service lapel button, which button may be worn by members of the immediate family of a person serving in the armed forces of the United States during any period of war or hostilities in which the Armed Forces of the United States may be engaged.

Other key points about wearing/showing the flag, according the US Flag Code:

(a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.
(b) The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.
(c) The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.
(d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker's desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.
(e) The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored in such a manner as to permit it to be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way.
(f) The flag should never be used as a covering for a ceiling.
(g) The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.
(h) The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.
(i) The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.
(j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.

(k) The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

I must say that the usage of the usa flag has pissed me off. Not that I worship the flag, but a lot of what is done to supposedly respect it is actually disrespect.

Unfortunately for the local prudes I diddled the priest before confirmation (he was cute! and he didn't stay a priest), so I kept his monsignor as a souvenir.

Ah the good old days, when terrorists could wear clothes. Alas I am not giving up me wings. The stupid part IS that u.s. soldiers wear the scarf.

Personally, here's my straw poll: Should we round up the conservative bloggers and

1. drop them off the nearest cliff?
2. daisy chain their explosive head-up-ass predilections from coast to coast and harness the hot air instead of coal burning plants?
3. move them to a different planet where they will be forced to hate themselves in the absence of anything different?

they are FREAKS. They look like us on the outside, but they're all pod-like on the inside.

38. worthy of a different thread but
Remember when Hackett and Feingold said all Americans who serve and pay taxes deserve the same rights, including marriage?

Well I haven't seen a candidate that is able to speak with that clarity or moral conviction, without waffling about "not getting hung up on terminology", and honoring states rights, and other non-direct answers.

I understand that one can have a different personal view on a topic, but I at the very least want to hear either candidate say clearly and firmly that marriage in the federal government is about the ability to protect your family and manage your property and assets, between any two adults regardless of gender.

If we claim to honor our "heroes" coming back from Iraq, then why don't we honor our dead gay soldiers the same way? Our community here in Dallas has sent off to Iraq dozens of soldiers and sailors and marines within the last year alone that are indeed open within our community but serving in silence, and often in fear as well. My dreamy partner (former Navy Lt.Cdr on "the" most noted aircraft carrier, can neither confirm nor deny, etc.) and I know a longtime committed career army "couple" who are both overseas in different stations who would not be allowed to mourn openly, or possibly even attend, and are not "allowed" to be married in either case.

That's my issue - I make enough duchettes to keep my family very very comfortable no matter what. We have resources, we will never hurt for a place to live, or want for food or water or money, and I can even keep the kids out of the U.S. military in a draft if they objected to the draft. There is nothing that any candidate is promising to fix for me that I haven't already fixed for myself and mine. All that remains is that my family is recognized as a family, that if I am hurt or dying that my partner can visit me in my hospital room for which I pay the bills, and that my children have more of a right to my estate than my nephews or siblings or cousins.

That's my single issue. I have never not voted. I have never failed to speak up to lawmakers and bullies, anywhere, ever. But I may elect to "not" vote if I can't find a candidate in this day and age that is willing to vote for me and my family. I don't "have to" vote for anyone, so I'm kind of free and at peace, at the same time I by god want to vote.

Howzat fer an answer!

-sui

It was just plain stupid for them to cancel their ads because a Republican became upset that the scarf Ray was wearing looked similar to something a terrorist group wears. They should have just told those protesting it was a scarf and for them to move on.
