8. I have to share this. This morning, the founder and Editor at Large
of Public Affairs Books (who recently published Scotty's opus) referred to himself as "a greasy eminence".

He looked pretty clean to me!

16. Good for you! I went out on the deck for the first time since
my ten foot depression hit and, the roses are alive but that's about it. It looks like the container garden in a horror movie! Maybe I can get back out there again and at least bury the dead.

14. Michael Moore is supposed to be on now.
Edited on Sun Jun-01-08 10:05 PM by Bozita
He must have been really something if they're pre-empting him with Scottie ratting out Bushco.

on edit:

The Scottie piece is done. They're filling in the balance of the time with ... Arlen Specter.

I tuned in for Moore and ended up with Arlen Specter.

18. I've moved over to my local teevee news. Gotta get the gross receipts for movies.
The station advertises themselves as dispensing "news you can use."

If I were smart enough, I could figure out how to use such major news to my advantage.

*sigh*

No such luck.

17. "This Common Secret," Susan Wicklund; Call-In
This was a replay of a half-hour call-in segment that was part of a book festival a little while ago. The author, Susan Wicklund, is an abortion doctor, the term she freely uses as part of a larger attempt to openly use the language, not be intimidated, and make the procedure as normal as it actually is in life.

The author said that some 40% of women will get an abortion during her life, although I don't know if that figure was an average. The beginning of the program mentioned some facts about abortion availability, such as that most doctors only do first-trimester abortions, and that is when most women seek them, that most insurance does not cover abortion services, although some do, and that abortions are becoming harder to get, with doctors closing down, refusing to do them or not being taught anymore at all--because of the general threat against them--and the sometime increasing restriction of the law. "Most women have abortions because they want to be good mothers," she said, because they do not have the resources to take care of a child at that time, are not emotionally ready, and they have realized it would be a disaster to go forward then. There was a little bit of a discussion on the grim threat abortion providers face, and the author mentioned that the violent, hysterical harassers they called "protesters" are still violating and scaring people at clinics, although most people might have assumed that they had been handled and done away with years ago. The author, as an abortion doctor, sometimes still wears a bullet-proof vest and a gun. God protect her.

There were calls taken from audience members, I think all were women, and it was split between the good feminist types who knew the value of the doctor, and the bravery that it took, and who thanked her, and on the other hand a few callers of the "Don't you feel guilty and know you are going to damnation?" ilk. I am as religious as anyone else on DU, but I know what a load of shit that is. I support abortions because I am a feminist, and want abortions, other birth control, and education in an egalitarian society. I don't relate it to religion at all, and am unimpressed with anti-feminist claims that anyone got it "from the Bible," where there are no references one way or the other on abortion.

At one poin the conversation turned more personal, and the doctor told how the long hours every day, of constant travel and work, "wreaked havoc" on her marriage, and then told a very moving story of her grandmother's response when she told her, years ago, that she was going to become an abortion doctor. Her grandmother told her a story: when they were kids, and abortion illegal, a friend of hers and her sister's had become pregnant, probably by incest, and they all decided to induce an abortion by poking hard inside her vagina to make her bleed heavily and destroy the pregnancy. Everything went wrong, and their young friend bled to death. She told her granddaughter that she had always felt like a murderer, and was so happy that she would now provide safe, legal, available abortions that the grandmother and her generation could never have had. (It reminded me of the horrible, famous picture of the woman from about 1943 I think it was, dead on the floor, bleeding, from a botched, illegal abortion. There are other victims, you know--like the woman!) It gave truth to the caller who said of her own abortion, "It saved my life," as she needed it for medical reasons.

The same caller expressed the fear and outraged moral conscience of a patient at a clinic who had had to put up with anti-abortion protesters and their yelling taunts. The caller said of the "protesters," "nobody has a right to be in the way of a person trying to get into a clinic," I think was the quote, with their painful, accusatory, stressful "rhetoric."

The author was going to write the book, then, because it was an era of many murders of abortion doctors, and a lot of threat, she waited for years, to this era, when it is somewhat better. I know this is a very sensitive topic that has to be handled carefully, because anti-abortion terrorists are so violent, demonic, raging. It makes me think of an old Phil Donahue program from the early 1990s I think it was, or late '80s; the great morning syndicated Phil Donahue, not that MSNBC corporate-interference. The topic was abortion, with a panel, and there were calls about people who knew they needed abortions for many reasons and were so glad they were able to get them, a woman who called in about a family member who "didn't believe in abortion," had a child, then abused it and ended up murdering the child, the whole audience was on the side of the women and the abortion doctors, and against the anti-abortion group, etc. I thought everything had gone really well, many great points made, the clear popularity of the feminist position was shown, all the rest. The next thing I knew, just after this program, one of the guests, Paul something or other, a rabid anti-abortion type, was arrested for murdering Dr. Gunn in Florida, an abortion doctor, who was described as a feminist, a warm, kind person, etc. The worst horror, after I thought the program went great.

These people are wonderful servants of patients who need them, and of a cause we all need. She was wonderful on this program, very calm and wise, and answered all callers with respect and care. No modern democracy can survive, and not understand the need to provide safe, legal, available abortion services to its citizens; it is a cornerstone of feminist understanding of the way the world is. She is a hero.
