Help! Photobucket photo won't resize to DU's requirements...
I'm clueless in resizing a picture in Photobucket.com that is TOO BIG to put in my DU signature. This is the original picture - the artist has given me permission to use it on this board.

The DU signature has to be "less than 400 characters, 500 pixels wide, 200 pixels tall, and FILE SIZE less than 20 KB."

I've reduced it to what is supposed to be the required size and dimensions.

Photobucket says this should fulfill the requirements, but the DU page rejects it over and over. ERROR -- FILE SIZE TOO BIG.

Any help here would be appreciated...

Thanks so much.

RL

1. Looks like it has to be smaller. I'm impatient... have to do this tomorrow.
Unless someone wants to do it and post it here so I can grab it. I wanted to crop the quote off the bottom (can't see it anyway) and maybe put a simple border around it.

Have to reorganize for tomorrow's activities. Audio Al, husband and photo expert, has gone out on some errands.

Thanks, folks.

4. That doesn't meet the requirements ...

It is 320 pixels high and 39.84KB.

Shrink it down to 200 pixels high, and that should take care of the file size problem.

I've only used Photobucket's re-size script once, but as I recall, it was not exactly feature packed. Does it allow you to specify dimensions, or does it provide you with a list of dimensions you can use?

6. Download GIMP...
...GIMP is free, open source and is compatible with both PC and MAC.

It has the capacity to resize pics and I use it all the time to make my images, such as these I made especially for DU:

I was working with therapy horses for five hours today. I really need a bath. My new volunteer venture since April.

www.forwardstride.org

Do you know about hippotherapy??? No, we do not use real live hippos! Hippo is the Greek word for "horse."

I love the Floatin' Falafel -- Rachel Ray parody. That's a stock shot of our state capital -- Salem, Oregon -- in the background. There was quite a bit of discussion about it on the local Portland TV news.

Appreciate your post,

RL

25. And I am stupid
I downloaded it and it it won't let me click on it to install. So I go back and read the directions (I know - should have done that BEFORE I downloaded) and it says I have to reinstall something for Leopard before it will work.

And I am too tired to mess with it tonight.

26. You're not stupid, computers are.
What you described is why people get so frustrated with software and such.

It's like believing you know how to boil water until you run into Microsoft's new Vista water boiler, which requires patches before you can use it.

About the little boy at the bottom left, who appears to be positioned correctly to take a glimpse up the little girl's skirt...

Someone at the DU told me about THAT a couple of years ago.

We decided that SHE was standing on HIS shoulders. Or he is a very strong and well-built little boy who is simply lifting her in the air. Or he is putting his fingers in his ears and she is levitating.

No consensus was reached at the time!

28. I'd be more worried about what the baby is...
eating. But, if one insists, it sure looks to me that the girl is standing on the boy's shoulders and he is steadying her.

(Anything else is either stupid or perverse.)

BTW, resizing pictures is something else I don't do online. I use Irfanview for all those simple corrections to pictures. In addition to cropping and adjusting color and contrast and stuff, it has a very simple "resize" function. (And it's free)

27. You didn't state what color that you wanted the border or how wide.
Edited on Mon Jun-02-08 10:53 PM by Mugu
I decided that blue, 6 pixels wide would look nice. The problem may be that the specs call for 200 high by 500 wide rather than 500 high by 200 wide. This image is 200 high by 148 wide for a file size of 8kb.

30. That IS nice, Mugu. But maybe just a tad larger... I'm missing some of the definition of the kids.
Edited on Tue Jun-03-08 11:58 AM by Radio_Lady
I like the blue, but the border is kind of thick, IMHO, and calls attention to itself.

What you did is that is really nice. Don't bother with this anymore ... it's good enough for this job. ***

*** Explanation!!!
We have an expression in this family. Comes from a handyman doing our kitchen renovation in the 1980s. He was frustrated by our pleas to do something over... He blurted out, "It's good enough for this job!" We all laughed when it was over!

Shortly thereafter, he and his wife moved from Massachusetts to Florida.

Calling Bob Hall... your name is too common for me to ever find you!

Particularly when the task is so easy.

Fixing the border is no problem, but you specified the the image needed to be 200 pixels high. To that end I cropped the image closer to the children.

This image is 300 pixels tall including the 4 pixel wide border.

The image is 250 pixels tall including 3 pixel border.

This image is 200 pixels tall including 2 pixel border.

38. Looks like you have it posted to Photobucket... now you have to get the DU avatar capability...
to pick it up.

Please go to the DU Lounge or General Discussion and post your question AND this picture. You have to go to your Options page and get the DU software that uploads the picture.

Someone will walk you through it... I'm sure. If your still hung up, I'll get out a PM to you...

I'm on my way out the door to a volunteer job this afternoon -- big day in politics!

39. ALYCE, THIS IS NOT A GOOD DAY TO DO THIS.
AVATARS AND SIGNATURE LINES ARE TURNED OFF BECAUSE OF HIGH TRAFFIC.

But you might catch someone who is bored at work and sick of politics to help you!

You're halfway there anyway -- you have the picture!
