GM seeds are blowing in the wind

By Hannah Hayes
03/02/2007

Genetically modified foods are dangerous. They create self-propagating genetic pollution. Scientists are adding novel characteristics to foods, tomatoes that won’t rot quickly, corn and cotton that produce their own pesticides and soybeans that are herbicide tolerant. It is vital to look beyond short-term benefits and think through consequences outside the laboratory. Weird manipulations present technology that uses genes from viruses, bacteria, plants, animals and even humans to create new life forms that don’t occur in nature. Accidental cross-pollination between conventional crops and wild relatives is a reality.

“Lab animals fed GM food showed damage to virtually every system studied,” said Jeffrey Smith, who collaborated with more than 30 scientists on his forthcoming book, “Genetic Roulette: The documented health risks of genetically engineered foods.” “Preliminary animal studies show, for example, that GM soy may alter sperm cells, change gene expression in embryos and lead to high mortality, stunted growth and reproductive problems in the offspring. There are also reports showing thousands of sick, sterile or dead people and livestock around the world who trace toxic or allergic reactions to eating GM products, breathing GM pollen or even touching GM crops at harvest.”

Those with the highest risks are children because their fast developing bodies are most affected by what they eat. “True Foods Now” provides an on-line shopper’s guide to foods that contain genetically engineered ingredients and those that don’t. Four popular baby formulas begin the danger list. Natural products shoppers will be comforted to see many familiar brands on the safe list. Unfortunately, most commercial brands seem to be contaminated.

1. Yep,
and if they contaminate your crops, *they* sue *you* for stealing their patented product.
