1. She was quoting an old hymn
but, geez, this clip is everywhere today - this is what happens when things are isolated out of context!

6. The question was- is she joking around, or is she serious?
Edited on Mon Mar-05-07 06:43 PM by Dr Fate
Why not try to craft an answer instead of writing it off this honest observation as "bashing"?

The GOP/media is going to call her on this- may as well have an answer or correct the problem before then.

10. it is bashing, though
it's obvious that's she hamming it up in that clip...

and that it's been posted numerous times already her at DU, and, as you say, the GOP is going to go after this - it's pretty clear that the people posting this link have questionable motives.

26. Perfect retort- thanks. That is all I was asking for.
I prefer an actual retort based on facts as opposed to the mere accuasation of "bashing"

I had not seen the other threads, I apologize.

39. Because she was still in Alabama and in front of a Southern audience
it's about one's location and not of whom one is speaking. Or would you prefer it if she switched accents whenever she switched topics? Now *that* would be fun!

Is she trying, on purpose, to isolate the South from the Democratic Party even further?

11. Well, there was that twenty-year stopover in Arkansas
which is where she originally picked up a Southern accent. As a Southerner who no longer lives in the south, I know that my accent comes and goes very easily.

This Was More Than An Affected Southern Accent
This was an attempt to simulate the drawl of a black poet.

The idea was admirable, the execution was poor, and the results...at least with respect to the "laugh at Hillary" response from the right wing...were to be expected.

I never heard her have a Southern accent, even as she became First Lady straight from Arkansas.

23. She uses a slight Southern accent sometimes
and, of course, there are a variety of Southern accents. The accent from this isolated clip was very plainly put-on, as she was quoting something, but she did use a slight Southern accent during the rest of the speech, and I've heard her use it in other speeches. I know my accent sneaks in whenever I'm amongst other Southerners.

36. If you've ever seen speaking clips of her from when she lived in Arkansas
she definitely had a Southern accent. These days, it comes and goes, but I've heard her use it more than once. And, yes, she's always had that Chicago accent, too - since she grew up in the Chicago area, I guess she'll never shake that one.

34. I guess that after 7 years in NY
Edited on Mon Mar-05-07 07:35 PM by madville
"Well, there was that twenty-year stopover in Arkansas"

I guess with that reasoning after 7 years in NY when her and Bill are home for about 12 hours it sounds like an episode of the Sopranos around the house. :) j/k

I live right near the FL/AL/GA state line and know people from all over the country and have never heard a "Southern" accent quite like that. We were all laughing about it at work this morning when I played it on the computer. It brought all us Democrats and Republicans together for a brief moment :)

But her accent was not "coming and going".

Listen to the way she said "power" in that clip. I spent alot of years in the south and a if I recall, her accent could be compared to a backwards hillbilly. If she was really trying to speak with that accent to connect with the south then she's an idiot. If she was trying to be funny about the way southerners talk then shes an even bigger idiot. Or maybe i'm just really stoned :)

Edit: Saw your post about reading the hymn. Do you have a link? Cuz now im stoned and interested. lol

9. It was taken out of context. See below
Edited on Mon Mar-05-07 06:49 PM by Connie_Corleone
(From Talking Points Memo)

"But as always, a simple fact-check shows this latest wingnut preoccupation to be highly dishonest. The audio clip Drudge linked to cherry-picked that quote and removed it completely from its context, which would have shown that Hillary wasn't adopting this accent or grammar or language as her own at all.

Rather, it turns out that Hillary was actually quoting the hymn lyrics of someone else -- while clearly and very openly imitating (not very well, it turns out) the cadences she thought the lyrics would traditionally have been delivered in. There was nothing phony about it at all."

More at http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/horsesmouth/2007/03/yet_another_win.php

(On Edit: She should've left out the southern accent when quoting the hymn.)

I've been trying to explain the context to people all day! Though, you're right, she shouldn't have used the accent during the quote, simply because it can be isolated and misinterpreted as it has been!
