The Independent: ‘The end of this disastrous presidency is finally in sight.’

On the heels of President Bush’s farewell tour of Europe, the Independent (UK) issued a scathing editorial today reflecting on his visit and presidency:

Perhaps Mr Bush’s most significant legacy, as far as Britain is concerned, will be the destruction of the instinctive trust of America and its leaders that once prevailed here. It is no exaggeration to say that Mr Bush has done more damage to relations between our two nations than any president in living memory. This rupture is not an accident of circumstance; there are no impersonal forces of history to blame. This sorry state of affairs is the consequence of the actions of a single leader and his small coterie of advisers.

............

And whatever the future holds for transatlantic relations, there will be very few in this country who watched President Bush's plane depart yesterday without a feeling of profound relief that the end of this disastrous presidency is finally in sight.

1. Oh, some of these particular players will remove themselves from the spotlight
But their foot soldiers and agenda will still be in operation.

2. It ain't over 'till it's over.
There's still plenty of time for Bush to create new disasters.

4. Saw snippet of a press conf with Gordon Brown yesterday
GWB looked and sounded terrible. Brown was asked about when UK troops can be withdrawn, especially to help in Afghanistan and gave standard imperialist arguments in a dignified manner-- They have a job to do. We won't place arbitrary timetables on their efforts. They will come home when the job is done. If more troops are required in Afghanistan, we'll have to send more. Both missions are distinct.

Then GWB grips his podium and sways forward and says-- We're withdrawing our troops. 30,000 or thereabouts. Something like that. We're bringin em home. Freakin idiot couldn't even see that Gordon was setting up some queue cards for him-- key phrases he could use. But no-- clutz destroys Brown's line of argument and puts him in jeopardy with his own people. Gee, thanks pal.

5. When does it end for those tortured? those maimed? those who buried loved ones?
those whose minds are forever trapped?

Bush simply being allowed to peacefully leave office isn't the end...and it never will be.
