Man who fatally beat tot on roadside IDed
http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/06/17/toddler.killed.ap/index.html#cnnSTCVideo

TURLOCK, California (AP) -- Police on Monday identified a man who was fatally shot by an officer for allegedly refusing to stop beating a toddler to death along a remote road.

Sergio Casian Aguilar, 27, parked his truck on an unlit road Saturday night, removed a 2-year-old boy from his car seat and proceeded to stomp, kick and punch the boy to death, authorities said. The boy was unrecognizable when he was pronounced dead at Emanuel Medical Center, the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department said.

Authorities have not released the boy's name but say they believe he was Aguilar's son. The Stanislaus County coroner and the California Department of Justice are testing DNA to confirm the relationship.

<snip>

Dan Robinson, a local volunteer fire department chief, told The Modesto Bee that at first glance, he thought the child was a dead animal in the road. He said when he realized it was a child, he tried to stop Aguilar.

Nothing makes this case any better. There is also several videos taken at the scene, here is the latest.

4. Hopefully, this will raise questions as to why a mentally ill parent went untreated
Of course, if this guy does turn out to be an undocumented worker, the racists are gonna have a parade.

7. If you watch the clip
they interviewed a Latino man who works at the dairy next to the road, and he was with his young sons. He talks about how he would feel if it had been one of his sons. I thought that was good to offset the racist a little bit. This could happen within any group unfortunately. There has been cases of people killing/injuring their children who they feel are demon possessed for a long time. It was not too long ago that a young white father placed his infant in a microwave to rid it of its demons. Loonies every one, they are projecting the evil inside themselves onto their children. JMHO

10. No, that won't calm the racists down one bit.
They're always looking for an excuse to let their hatred out. Watch Lou Dobbs take this story and run with it.

9. If anyone uses that racist crap
just say two words "Andrea Yates." Child abuse is not limited to any race.

13. I have child abuse stories that no one wants to hear
but most of it involves sexual abuse. And trust me, I have tried to tell people some of them and they get too disgusted for me to ever finish even one of the cases. None of it involves Latinos as the abusers. And I do know Latinos that I do not agree with the way they punished their children, as well as members of other groups. but to put this on one group is just foolish. There are good and bad in all groups of people. What more can I say, life and working with abused children turned me into a misanthrope.

6. I live in the area!
that's my county. It's all we can talk about at work. I'm surprised there were that many passer-bys -- that area is extremely isolated farm country. From what I read, the poor child was dead before the father even got to that location -- there was a lot of blood in the truck leading police to say that he was probably beaten to death elsewhere.

God, you just hope in cases like this that the baby died instantly with that first blow. How horrific.

8. I hate to say this
but I am glad to hear that the child was already dead before this. Like you, I hope the child died quickly and did not feel the horrible things done to his poor little body.

19. When I lived in Silicon Valley, I'd go through Stanislaus County with great caution.
It seemed to me that the local road patrol cops were eager to ticket cars from the Bay Area ... and there were pockets of extreme right-wingers there to be avoided. I loved to go white-water rafting ... but I couldn't keep from thinking "Deliverance" each time.

14. I have heard a glut of child abuse stories
just this year. A real bellyful. I can hardly stand it. There's a lot of bad ideas/mental illness running around out there. What hopes do we have to combat this? Millions of people can't even get a check-up, let alone comprehensive psychiatric care.

15. As financial times get bad, this sort of thing goes up
As does crimes such as bank robberies and other types of theft. Abuse in the home increases as presure for financial survival goes up. It goes on and on. Sometimes when people cannot make a living, their frustration turns on those they care/or should care about. I don't know if this is the case wiwth this man, he may have been just sick, drugged out, or evil.

Culturally, some in the Latino and other communities do not turn to mental health facilities for help but go more often to the church or community outreach programs. Now with the times being what they are, members of the community may be so busy trying to get help for their members in other ways that some types of problems, such as mental stress, may not be getting the attention that it needs. Also, free/affordable clinics are often not as easy to find in small towns as they are in urban areas.
