"I, unfortunately, have been to too many disasters as president,"

QUINCY, Illinois (Reuters) - Hundreds of volunteers on the surging Mississippi River piled sandbags atop strained levees on Tuesday as the worst Midwest flooding in 15 years delivered a blow to the U.S. economy and world food prices.

A levee broke in Gulfport, Illinois, sending muddy waters from the most important U.S. waterway cascading into nearby farmland and a few homes. No one was injured but authorities closed the bridge across the river to Burlington, Iowa.

U.S. President George W. Bush promised aid to the stricken region, where billions of dollars in farm and business losses in the heart of the U.S. grain belt looked set to increase inflation pressures on prices for food, fuel and other goods.

"I, unfortunately, have been to too many disasters as president," Bush said after a briefing on the flooding.

But Sen. Robert Byrd, a West Virginia Democrat, said little had been done to prevent flooding and Bush had learned nothing from Hurricane Katrina and other disasters.

"President Bush has asserted that investing in America's needs is somehow 'wasteful' and his budget, which does not add one thin dime for a boost in levee funding, reflects this sentiment" Byrd said.

6. Senator Byrd nailed him
Wouldn't it be nice if we had a National Guard to help the people in Iowa? After all, that's why it's called our NATIONAL Guard. But, we don't, and Fuckface was too busy doing his "farewell tour" in Europe to notice that his own country needed help.

It's astonishing how he continues to be disgusting at even higher and higher levels.

I feel like we've all fallen down a rabbit hole for the past seven-and-some years. This is not the America I grew up loving and believing in.

And by the way, you'd think the schmuck-in-chief would know better than to feed us a straight line like that.

28. why keep giving him a pass?
I don't understand why people here keep giving president Bush a pass. Seeing him as incompetent, and mocking and ridiculing him is doing just that. This administration has been one of the most successful ever. The problem is with their agenda, not with whether or not they are competent. Who here actually believes that this administration *intended* to look out for the people? That seems to me to be the height of denial and naivete, yet why else would people continue to amuse themselves with this "worst president in history" bullshit? He is the best president in history for the wealthy and powerful few.

For one thing, I do not think that the president is calling the shots in this administration nor is he making decisions. He is a glad-handing front man, a carnival barker, a figurehead.

57. here is the problem
We play into the hands of the right wingers again and again. We are such pathetically weak opponents to the tyrants. Our very serious and vital message about the crimes of the administration, the deadly destructiveness of the libertarian doctrine, the growing tyranny and the ever-expanding control over our lives by the wealthy and powerful few, is lost in the noise of Bush hatred. It feels good - it is self indulgent - to mock and ridicule the individual, but it comes at a very steep political price, and when people are suffering and dying, bombed and tortured, persecuted and detained in cages, we cannot afford these self-indulgent and adolescent behaviors.

Hating Bush is a poor substitute for saving the people and the country, and the two quite clearly work against each other and are mutually exclusive.

45. begging your pardon?
What I am doing about it is talking to people in a sober and serious way about the emergency the country faces, which has little if anything to do with the skills or personality of the figurehead in the oval office. I would not want to trivialize the crisis, nor have people tune out my message, because I was amusing myself mocking and ridiculing the person holding the office of the presidency.

46. I don't find that in the least amusing
Chaplin's work was a warning, not intended as light entertainment - "rent it today!!" He tried to use comedy to convey a very serious message, at the risk of having people see it as merely entertaining and funny and missing the serious message. He may well have failed.

In light of what did happen after that film was made, I do not find it funny or amusing in the least, and it is very disturbing to me that you would recommend that film in response to my post.

People were lulled into complacency by the ideas that Hitler and Mussolini were buffoons, and that they were incompetent, and failed to respond strongly enough to the threat. "Ha ha ha look at those goofy guys. They are so incommpetent and ridiculous that they are not worth taking seriously. Oh for the days when we can get some stylish, fashionable and intelligent people into power so we don't have to be embarrassed by these clowns."

Not funny
