The First Annual Darryl Issa Challenge Contest
The charming, affable, and always topical Mr Issa of California has hit a record low in Congressional rhetoric (as you probably know) by invoking the name and legacy of the recently deceased and beloved Tim Russert to push for new offshore drilling legislation. Tim Russert, of course, had practically no affiliation at all with the issue of offshore drilling. But Issa's allusion is more than tasteless, coming the same day people traveled to DC for his wake, more than inappropriate, because it had nothing to do with Russert's life or interests, & more than self serving, being an expression of the drill and kill nihilistic view of our ecology by the people who seek to plunder our nation's precious resources.

It is almost the perfect storm of bad taste.

Almost. Because your challenge today is to come up with an even tackier invocation of a beloved public figure for your own narrow right wing interests.

By way of example...

"You know, the late Porter Wagoner was more than just a big Nashville star. He was an institution, touching the hearts of millions of fans with his simple odes to love, fidelity, and the consolations of a broken heart. He sang of "The Green Grass of Home", "Just Someone I Used To Know", and simply requested "Please Don't Stop Loving Me." And so, I ask you now, my fellow Americans, to honor this Bard of Fidelity to protect our nation from the threat to the institution of marriage that Porter would have been so worried about--Help us stop gay marriage.

I'm sure if Porter were with us today, he'd be the first to tell us America can't be America if people of the same gender are allowed to formalize their lifetime commitments to each other."

Whatcha got?
