My mom and dad were both openly racist in the sixties, they were scared to death of uppity negroes, and moved our whole family out of St. Louis to the suburbs, white flight they called it back then. They were terrified of Martin Luther King, they used racial slurs, they also hated hippies of course.
Then about 35 years ago they went through a born again experience, fueled by my brother, and only now are they coming out of their cult-like devotion to the charismatic movement, turning their backs forever on pat robertson and his ilk. They've come full circle, and somewhere along the line, they lost their racism, bless em'.
They've both been life long Democrats, always vote, and love to talk politics, except with my repub born again brother, who will never change. I was talking to my dad last night on the phone and he told me again that he's voting for Obama and damn proud to do it. I was just quietly amazed at how much water has passed under the bridge since the turbulent sixties.
