More Going To Four-Day Work Weeks

posted 4:32 pm Thu June 19, 2008 - Tulsa

Steve Ward had been punching sheet metal for nine months before things got rough.

It wasn't the work, it was getting to work.

"Well I really enjoyed my job but it was getting to where the gas was getting to my pocketbook and I really didn't want to quit," says Steve Ward Dilbeck Manufacturing.

With a daily commute of 82 miles he was stuck between a rock and a gas pump until he and his co-workers thought.(sic)

"It would save us a lot of money if we go to a 4 day work week."

1. As Green Team Leader, I will be pushing for it at my place of employment
Most likely nine slightly extended days on, one day off.

2. There was a news item on the radio last week about a smallish company in the suburbs of NJ.
The owner knew that everyone drove to work and it was getting more and more of a hardship. He added $50.00 to the paycheck of every employee, and instituted a 4-day, 10 hour-a-day work week. Each employee was allowed to choose which 4 days they would work, as long as adequate coverage was provided each day of the week.
Sounds like a great place to work. Not too many employers are that empathetic. I know mine is not.

3. Ive been working 10 hour days since starting w/my employer
Also, Anoka county just north of Minneapolis/Saint Paul is giving workers the option. Its nice having that option and it saves vacation time too.

4. One of my sisters started a four day work week about a month ago
She really likes it. She's saving money on gas and is able to spend more time at home doing things she likes. She's even called and asked which books she should be reading!

7. here in Michigan the Government's talking about it.
We actually might see it. Damn sure wish I could have it in my workplace. 3 hours of commute per day = (roughly) 1.6 tanks of gas per week @ about $56 per tank = $89.60 per week. I ride share so it equals $179.20 per month. Can you say AAAARRRGH?

Why the auto companies don't re-tool to make mass transit beats the hell out of me. Seems like a classic case of cranio - rectal insertion.

11. I have a friend in New York City
whose husband's company went to a 4-day work week (staff alternates) because of the gas. He's the only one I've heard of. I know I'm seeing A LOT more people on my commuter train since gas hit $4 (which was around 6 weeks ago).

13. Not yet, but I would not want to work 10-hour days.
I'm very happy with 8-hour 5-day work weeks, since I only have about a 26-mile roundtrip to work.

14. My company has been doing telecommuting
Edited on Fri Jun-20-08 09:57 AM by supernova
since at least the early 90s, and flextime before that.

Currently I don't have a laptop, just a desktop, so I have to come in to the office, but I hope to get back to being able to telecommute soon.

It's the only way to work and keep some sense of work/life balance.

edit: As for hours, no one really cares what hours you work, just as long as you show up for meetings and other such stuff as you're supposed to. So if you wanna work 4x10 or whatever, no biggie.
