Here are the 5 stages:
1-Denial
2-Anger
3-Bargaining
4-Depression
5-Acceptance
Generally speaking, the 5 stage usually follow this path, but sometimes, like now, some stages come before others. You decide. Here's my opinion.
At first there was the Denial. "oh there is still plenty of oil left", "it will regenerate itself!", "the Saudi's are controlling the taps", "they are controlling the price", "Look!! Look! power from water!!!"..
It seems as if we have skipped over anger or it could be that we are seething below the surface or just holding it till later. Not sure. Kind of scary really.
In my opinion, we have entered the bargaining phase. "Let's cut the gas tax for the summer!!", "let's drill ourselves out of this mess!!".
Here's a great quote from the Peak Oil review...
“The projections in the OCS access case indicate that access to the Pacific, Atlantic, and eastern Gulf regions would not have a significant impact on domestic crude oil and natural gas production or prices before 2030.”

http://www.energybulletin.net/node/45479Anger or Depression comes next. How it plays out, I haven't the foggiest, but since the Dems in congress don't seem up to the tasks of being realistic about things, "let's regulate the speculators so the price will fall!" and we can continue to piss away our future on imaginary $2 gas!, our anger will continue to grow and will either turn into apathy, depression (stage 4) or we will actually get pissed off (the late entrance of stage 2).
I honestly don't see acceptance even by those in the know for a while.
I know peak is real, but it doesn't mean that on a deep emotional level that I'm actually ready for it. I still like my morning chai tea and the occasional oil fed lunch. Until those are actually gone and I have to cut back on portion size (more so than I have already) it won't hit me or many of us. It will be then and only then we will actually believe it's happening.
We live in a world that is controlled by oil.
And honestly, if you think that the high price of oil is only due to the fact that speculators are the sole reason for the price being high, I have a bridge to sell you. Please read the Peak oil review week on week at www.energybulletin.net and you will see that we in the US choose to live in a bubble in regards to how and why the price of oil is so high. We aren't the only ones having issues. And in the grand scheme of things, we could have it A LOT worse than many nations around the world.
Any who, flame away, I don't care, this is what I believe. And if any of you have solid evidence to prove otherwise I would love to hear it. Because the argument for the speculators being the cause for the high prices, so far, has been nothing but supposition. I have seen no evidence what so ever, but I have seen plenty of evidence to the fact that oil is at peak.
