Zeroing in on Bush-Cheney, Robert Parry – The definitive summary. WOW
Edited on Wed Mar-07-07 01:33 PM by autorank

This is THE SUMMARY for political junkies, Fitz FANatics. It’s not over by a long shot. Enjoy.

Zeroing in on Bush-Cheney

Robert Parry Consortium News March 7, 2007 12:17 pm

Criminal trials – especially relating to national security scandals – are an imperfect way of learning the larger truth. As with the four-count conviction of former White House aide I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, the charges are often structured narrowly to avoid long battles over classified secrets or inherent presidential powers.

But even limited trials can offer important glimpses into the inner workings of an administration, especially one as secretive as George W. Bush’s. Though Libby was convicted only on perjury and obstruction charges, there should be little doubt what the full picture looks like.
If the panorama could be viewed all at once, the American people would see an administration that, in summer 2003, felt it could pretty much do whatever it wanted to anyone. Bush's inner circle validated every cliche about the arrogance of power, particularly the old saying about absolute power corrupting absolutely.

In the modern media context, defending that omnipotence meant coming up with demeaning comments about critics who dared to speak out. The goal was to generate talking points that could be given to the administration’s many friends in Congress or at right-wing and mainstream news outlets.

Snip

As Denis Collins, one of the Libby jurors, explained after the verdict, “we’re not saying that we didn’t think Mr. Libby was guilty of the things we found him guilty of. But it seemed like he was … the fall guy.”

5. He's amazing ... ConsortiumNews rocks.

I donated to them and added a zero by mistake. When I saw the mistake I just left it in place.

He's one of the last serious professionals around - Parry, Hersh, Waas... the 'trinity'

11. Care to imagine how LITTLE we would know about BushInc if we didn't have these FEW real reporters
willing to stick their necks out for the truth about BushInc and those Dems who enable them at every crucial turn of history?

9. One Lie That Never Seems To Be Challenged
" The RNC then quoted Cheney as saying, “I don’t know Joe Wilson. I’ve never met Joe Wilson.”

Of course he knew Joe Wilson. Both had deep ties to the state dept for years. In addition Joe Wilson was the ambassador to Iraq who stood up to Saddam Hussein during Gulf I. When Cheney was secretary of defense.

10. I read somewhere that the book Cheney had with him
in his chained-down Airstream was called "The History of English Speaking Peoples Since 1900". So I looked it up, and it seems like it might be more accurately called "The Dominance of America Since 1900".

Ms. Krebs and I were discussing this recently, how this administration just thinks we are better people than other people. When it is said that "America is the greatest country in the world", I think it's because we have people from all over, we live in a place with abundent resources, and we have created a combination of circumstances that result in a great life for most of us. But apparently, BushCo reads that phrase as if we are actually better people than others, and that is what allows them to pursue world domination regardless of consequences.

Very scary. Pisses me off.

Fascism -- Authoritarianism -- Monarchism -- Theocracy -- (Dittoheadism) ...

... it's all the same thing.

13. Rep Conyers will be holding Hearings about this.
Those Hearings should lead to the Impeachment of VP Cheney, at the very least.

21. You'll like this....
"Meanwhile, the British Empire was in decline, but did not yet know it. Any number of other powers might have won primacy in the twentieth century and beyond, including Germany, Russia, even possibly France. Yet the coming century was to belong to the English-Speaking peoples who successively and successfully fought the Kaiser’s Germany, Axis aggression, and Soviet Communism, and are now struggling against Islamic fundamentalist terrorism."

From you link above

Now, Feb 1, 2007, Senate Committee on Foreign Relations]

A mythical historical narrative to justify the case for such a protracted and potentially expanding war is already being articulated. Initially justified by false claims about WMD's in Iraq, the war is now being redefined as the “decisive ideological struggle" of our time, reminiscent of the earlier collisions with Nazism and Stalinism. In that context, Islamist extremism and al Qaeda are presented as the equivalents of the threat posed by Nazi Germany and then Soviet Russia, and 9/11 as the equivalent of the Pearl Harbor attack which precipitated America's involvement in World War II. 15. Cheney's "interest in a dubious document" -- is the Real Smoking Gun
The point that seems to get lost in all this the original "cheney request."

As usual, the Euphemedia -- via Chris Matthews -- has it bassackwards, by obsessing on the report end of that query. He wants to know if he got a report back, and if so why not tell someone (at worst, a LIHOP scenario).

The real revelation there (and what Tricky Dick II was rabid to coverup) is that it was already a "dubious document." That he was picking through the Intel Trash Bin to find a smelly, old red herring to terrorize the American People with.

The Big Lie of "Mushroom Clouds!! ... in 45 minutes!" was constructed with malice aforethought.

That reality cuts through all the euphemistic non-responsibility memes like "cherry picking," "intelligence failure," and "garbage in, garbage out." It flips the switch from LIHOP to MIHOP.

It's kind of hard to defend haplessness with Deadeye Dick ankle's up in the dumpster.

27. They've been creating 'dubious documents' for decades without much fuss.
Since 9-11, there have been more CIA analysts who have come to figure out that the BFEE is indeed running a rogue government and this country can no longer handle the backlash those covert dealings have caused.

29. You know the Good Things about being around here.....
I remember the early DU Days when we waited for a "small mention of truth" from the NYT, WaPo, LA Times and a few Magazines like Time, Newsweek while we combed the pages of the "Nation, Rolling Stone, Salon,Buzzflash, Media Whores Online" (anyone remember "MWO?") and other Liberal or DEM psites for someone posting any semblence of TRUTH for us out here who were the TRASHED DEMOCRATS.

TODAY...WE HAVE "You Tube" and other "Instant Video Snips" that capture snips of MSM that we can't always watch or record and we have so many Liberal Blogs and Sites it's hard to keep up with them all.

We might not SEE THE CHANGE....and those "New to the FIGHT" don't know how little there was years ago after the Chimp was Installed as "Emperor of America"....but times are getting better for TRUTH in small increments...but at least it's moving FORWARD and not BACKWARD. ...

just my 2 Cents observation.
