dkos: Evangelicals nauseated by Rudy's sluttiness

http://feeds.dailykos.com/~r/dailykos/index/~3/100001855/36733

It looks like Rudy Giuliani's efforts to pander to Evangelical voters may have hit a snag:

A Southern Baptist leader said Tuesday that evangelical voters might tolerate a divorced presidential candidate, but they have deep doubts about GOP hopeful Rudy Giuliani, who has been married three times.

Richard Land, head of public policy for the Southern Baptist Convention, told The Associated Press that evangelicals believe the former New York City mayor showed a lack of character during his divorce from his second wife, television personality Donna Hanover.

"I mean, this is divorce on steroids," Land said. "To publicly humiliate your wife in that way, and your children. That's rough. I think that's going to be an awfully hard sell, even if he weren't pro-choice and pro-gun control."

It seems that some conservative Christians aren't willing to overlook the fact that Rudy's second wife had to get a court order to stop him from bringing his mistress over for quality time with the wife and kids. Go figure.

First it was James Dobson of Focus on the Family saying that he wouldn't support John McCain "under any circumstances," and now the Southern Baptist Convention is repudiating Giuliani. This sounds like good news for Romney and better news for Democrats.

1. I think Rudi is only running because he heard that the Pres
can score some primo tail.

2. It's actually a fool's errand to find much of anything positive about Rudy
Giuliani. I'm not sure I'd single out his clumsy marriage record as the sole transgression. There are MANY others to choose from.

On the other hand, I don't pay much attention to Mr. Land. His outfit sows discord and fear in this country, and the less of him the better, IMO.

13. Have you seen anything negative about Giuliani since 9/11?
I've seen nothing but adoring praise from the "mainstream" media since that time.

If there has been any mainstream criticism of him, I have not seen it.

16. Agree. They're nuts about Rudy. He gets the praise an older brother gets
from a little kid, just because he's older and taller and can ride a bike.

It won't be long before Romney and McCain and the other GOP hacks in the race start shoving Rudy around.

We're going to hear a bit more about his administration in NYC, and I think the Republican primary voters are going to abandon America's Mayor at a rapid clip.

I think Sam Brownback has a better shot at the GOP nomination than Giuliani.

18. Just like we heard all that negative stuff about Bush in late '99
and early 2000?

How many times have Dems been left shaking their heads about how could anybody support Bush?

19. It could be that Rudy will surprise me and win the nomination.
But I'm not seeing him getting over all the skeletons. Bush had some, but there was nothing concrete. No one had footage of the coke use, the Guard abandonment, and so on. The DUI ticket was the only thing that was documented against him, so a lot of fools in the Red States lined up in the rain and said, Hell, we want that guy to be the preznit cuz he's the one we wanna have us a beer with. That other feller, Gore, he's an elitist smarty-pants.

With Rudy, his NYC mayoral record is right there, complete with gay rights support and pro-choice positions. Once his opponents start running ads about his pro-abortion stance, a lot of South Carolinian Republicans are going to go to Brownback.

3. I'm sure they don't like that he is Catholic either
but don't have the balls to come on out and say it.

Not to defend Rudy...

5. Please christians share your nausea
about the divorce rates and incest of your own members. How bout the porn star sex of your kids who have promised to remain virgins. Maybe you can draft Ted Haggard to run for president. Or that great face of the "christian" movement in America Marc Foley. Or that maintainer of the sanctity of marriage, rush limbaugh. Maybe dobson can take you all into his shower and show you his penis and make everything alright. I'll never vote for a republican for anything but I believe giuliani has more integrity and is of a higher moral standing then any spokesmen of focus on the family, and giuliani is a scum bag.

10. Sumbitches
piss me off to blindness. Always blathering on about how good they are and how they love the constitution and love America. The motherfuckers live and breath to destroy the constitution. They do not know how lucky they are to live in this country. They are free to practice their hate in a tax exempt status and yet they want to force their practices on all. The life of those who believe and yet do not know. Please evangelicals if you want to live in a theocracy, I'll hold the border open for you. Go. Today. This is not the land of focus on the family or the baptist church it is the land of the free and by god it will remain so.

14. The only thing they give a shit for is whether he's sufficiently enthusiastic enough
about putting women in jail who get abortions or use the birth control pill (which are morally equivalent, in their judgment.)

On that basis alone Rudy will never get the GOP nod.

we're still 20 months out and they're fast running out of acceptable candidates.
