From the "WTF?!" file...

Man Sentenced for Shoving Cell Phone Down Girlfriend's Throat

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - In a crime that grabbed national headlines, Marlon Brando Gill was sentenced Wednesday to six years in prison for an attack against his ex-girlfriend in December of 2005.

Gill's second trial ended in a conviction for second-degree assault for shoving a cell phone down the woman's throat.

His first trial resulted in a hung jury.

The judge gave him six years of a maximum seven-year sentence, saying Gill had a pattern of abuse that would only escalate.

After the sentence was announced, the defense immediately announced there will be an appeal.

I can't imagine what was going through this miscreant's mind when he did this; he obviously has very real anger-control issues. Also, a little conflict-resolution counseling should be in order.

I must say, though, that I live in the KC area and this is the first I've heard about this case even though the article describes it as "a crime that grabbed national headlines."

1. Question: Does The Phone Still Work?
What happens if she left it on vibrate?

3. So many people talk about doing it . . .
Okay, sorry; very bad joke was coming, but I stopped myself.

Six years seems a fit punishment for the crime. I hope he gets some help and treatment, because actually, physically shoving something down someone's throat takes some real sustained, dedicated anger.

4. I heard about the case, and think the guy got screwed
His story was that she swallowed it on her own. Her story was that he was mad because he wanted to see the numbers she had programmed in it. I feel like she swallowed it to keep him from being able to see the numbers. The stories add up that way. This reminds me of the guy I know whose girlfriend took his keys and locked herself in the bedroom. He broke the door down so he could get his keys and get to work. Later at work, he was arrested for domestic violence!

13. oh oh, there's a solution
Yet the person who has had his keys stolen must be further inconvenienced. He's the original victim, and all he took it out on was a door.
I should not have mentioned that story though. It muddies the waters, and he could be lying about his side of the story.

15. Just saying there are options if someone takes your keys, that's all
options besides breaking down a door. Sometimes things happen, like someone takes your keys. It is good to have some legal options available. That is all.

As for the OP's original story (how did phone get in her throat), I so not know enough, and have no opinion due to my lack of knowledge except it sounds like a couple people need some help.

17. I think that using force to get your keys back SHOULD be a legal option
A couple people may need some help, but in this case the guy has already spent 400 days in jail and has been sentenced to six years.
I doubt if that is really gonna help.

18. Lots of people think lots of things SHOULD be legal options.
I have a few myself, like getting married SHOULD be a legal option no matter what your sexual orientation. Wages SHOULD LEGALLY be the same no matter what your color or sex is.

9. yeah, but why would he shove it down her throat
because he wanted to see the numbers on it? Her story makes no sense. Maybe if he got mad about the numbers on it, but it is more likely she put it in her mouth so that he could not see it. She did not really swallow it. It got caught in her throat and she was taken to a hospital.

5. I live just outside Indep. MO....
...The original report on this story was that the woman had tried for some reason to on her own to swallow the phone (!)--but eventually it came out that the boyfriend had forced it into her mouth. It was a big regional story at the time, but I do recall it getting some national mention. You are right, the guy has problems; I'm of the strong opinion that a man who uses violence on a woman needs counseling, alright--with a two-by ten over his head (I'm a man myself, BTW.)

Oh, and hello from MO--always good to hear from a rational Kansan!

It was attempted homicide, IMO.
