Do you hate the abuse of your liberties by having Onstar?

OnStar-permission to spy on you. I'm sure it has helped some people, but this might work both ways.
Just a fleeting thought. :hi:

1. I won't have it. I don't even have a cell phone. They can track them, too.

2. I've been having similar thoughts, myself
I can keep a cell phone in my pocket and a Garmin or a Tom-Tom on the dash, if I am so inclined. That way, if I need help, it still comes to me on my own terms.

29. Nope, no OnStar over here
No GPS system, either. Just a cell phone and a AAA membership.

3. I don't even like the idea of those boxes under the seat
You know, the ones that log all of your car's movements with an accelerometer?

They can pull those things our of your car with a court order in case of an accident.

Yet, we're not informed they're there and have no access to the data inside.

24. The computers in most cars sold record about 30 seconds of the last operation, so....
they can tell what speed you were doing, if you hit your brakes, and lots of other data.

5. There is NO "abuse of your liberties."
If you're dumb enough to sign up for On-Star and expect that you won't be tracked, that is another issue.

But this isn't an issue of "liberties." This is a service people sign up for. If you don't want General Motors (and it's list subscribers) tracking you, don't get On-Star.

10. uh-huh
and if through the horribly misnamed "Patriot Act" they ask GM for their records of your travels? Which they can't even TELL anyone/their customers about, or that corporation (with personhood ;-) ) "will be subject to prosecution"

The noose is getting pretty d*mn tight now. ENOUGH! More than ENOUGH! It's really gone 'beyond the pale'.

11. Comes standard on my company vehicle.
Didn't sign up for it, it's just there.

I wonder if my boss can eves drop on what I say sometimes, they do own the vehicle and who knows what "services" are available for the corporate fleet.

16. *yawn* *stretch* who cares..........
Once you were free, and now you are NOT. You didn't notice the moment you were caged, that will haunt YOU and your ancestors for quite a LONG, LONG time.

No peace (or good wishes) shall come to a ready-made slave.

23. September 25th, 1981.
Edited on Thu Aug-07-08 12:18 AM by DiktatrW
That was the day I entered Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot Paris Island SC.

As for my ancestors, that would have been late December, 1913.

Some of us know.

Edit: BTW, I have for many years been what most here would consider a slave driver. Personally, I know we are all slaves, including yourself.

19. That is another question
As for giving On Star tacit permission to do watever they do, that is not a restriction of liberties, per se.

22. of course it's another question, but how many onstar buyers would sign up if
they knew they were going to be on the patriot/nsa list for SURE?

you think they're not?

that's the point

I understand the voluntary nature of the purchase agreement

18. Subscribe or not, all GM cars are equipped with the On Star devices.
I wonder if they can still track a vehicle even if the owner hasn't subscribed.

8. My "other mother" would not drive without it.
She's a nervous wreck that something would happen to her in the middle of the day in the middle of town and nobody would assist her, so it's a great product for her.

As for me, noplace I go is interesting enough to track :)

9. OnStar is downright creepy
From what I hear in the commercials, they have access to many things....

1. Your location (GPS?)
2. Whether your car is locked or not. And control over the locks themselves.
3. Audio monitoring (by permission or all the time? How do we know?)
4. Vehicle damage detection.
5. Engine condition.

And there are probably a few more.

All these things that could ALSO be used AGAINST you if ever the data got into the wrong hands.

I'd disable it entirely if I ever got a GM vehicle.

26. The Feds tracked and recorded two dope dealers using thier OnStar system, so they can listen.
Edited on Thu Aug-07-08 04:50 AM by Truth4Justice
.....to you if they want to, without you knowing it.

In this case, I think the Feds did have a warrant to do so, but who knows what the OnStar employees do when no one is looking?

27. General Motors airbag-equipped cars since 1974 have sensing and diagnostic modules (SDMs)
event data recorders / blackboxes have been pulled from cars and used against individuals in court.

Today, insurers will give you a discount if you allow them to monitor you by turning on the blackbox.

28. Big trucks have had "Tattle-Tails" forever. They have a device that records 20 cars ahead, now.
They can take the recorder out of the rig and prove in court if any of the car drivers were at fault in an accident, and not the truck. Or visa-versa.

Its big brother time folks :-(
