Rapture Ready fan says He provided her a wedding gown & trousseau but no spouse.
"Over five years ago the Lord told me He would bring me to the one He created me for - he moved me thousands of miles and supernaturally provided a wedding gown and even a trousseau. When you're lonely you're also extrememely vulnerable, so I've left it entirely up to Him to bring us together. I'm so tired of waiting..."

1. Magical Thinking.
John Bradshaw, for all his faults, covered that one quite nicely.

Well, my dear lady, that's what happens when you wait for something that doesn't exist to magically make something happen.

7. "...supernaturally provided a wedding gown" ??
She sounds like a very lonely, delusional person.

Despite the fact that I generally avoid fundies like the plague, I'd kinda like to hear the story of that "supernatural" gown and trousseau.

Otherwise, all I can do is shake my head in sorrow for her sad life.

What a sad way to live one's life.

20. Really.
You can feel her sadness in her post, too. Almost despairing.

Waiting, always waiting... for Jesus to fix everything in her life and rapture her off to another place, with nothing required from her but unquestioning faith and obedience.

I wonder how much of her situation is due to delusional religiosity and how much is due to depressional inertia... and which came first?

10. I used to hear stories like that all the time when I went to fundie church
When I was growing up and went to fundie church with my parents, I'd hear stories like that all the time. Someone would get up and testify that they had been praying for something, and it just "miraculously appeared".

I never did get the stuff that I prayed for when I was growing up. Of course, I'm sure it was because I was just being selfish :sarcasm:

21. I think there may be something to "prayer"...
...but I don't think it's a personal god responding to an individual's plea. If a desired goal is possible to begin with, it's likely attainable with the right choices.

When something is on your mind constantly and every fiber of your being reaches for that goal, you will tend to make choices on a consistent basis that will bring you closer to what it is you desire.

Things like visualization, prayer, meditation, magick, and other rituals sharpen your focus on your goal and intensify your concentration, so of course they help.

There's nothing "miraculous" about it, but the effect is real. It's very much like smiling people attracting smiles, or the "observer effect" in particle physics.

23. Mind over matter?
I do believe that the human mind is a lot more powerful than many people think. Whether it's prayer, meditation, etc, I'm sure that it's possible to see certain effects.

I'm sure that there are also a bunch of prayers that are 'self-fulfilling prophecies' - ie someone prays for a job, they go out looking for a job, and manage to find one. It's not so much that some magical deity bestowed upon them a job, as much as they took things into their own hands. However, in this case, this poor woman seems to be waiting for Prince Charming to literally appear on her doorstep.

25. Not even mind over matter.
Like I said above, when something is on your mind constantly, you will make choices that bring you closer to it. Prayer or whatever sharpens your focus on your goal and intensifies your concentration... and presumably spurs you to appropriate action. No magical deity required.

The woman in the OP is waiting for someone else to take all the actions needed to fulfill her desires, forgetting that she needs to participate in her own life.

22. I'd bet that the 'supernatural' part is that an ad for a really cheap wedding dress
fell out of the newspaper shortly after a prayer session. Or, she saw a perfect dress at the store on her way home from church. All in all, I feel sorry for her...

24. I'm thinking that someone gave it to her or she found it abandoned somewhere.
I'm confused about the trousseau part though. I thought the trousseau was the rest of the bride's wardrobe - everything from underwear to jeans to Sunday dresses to work suits. Did God magically transport a fully-stocked walk-in closet into this woman's house?

It is really sad.

14. It sounds like she expects too much.
I lived with a woman like that. She had it all built up where the man should bring flowers all of the time and write poetry for her. She wanted the kind of romance that only exists in romance novels (that she read continually) and was continually disappointed in the reality of job, bills, and kids.

She left me for a Mexican because she liked his accent.

Someone who's really "rapture ready" doesn't need to hang on to a wedding gown.

Those magical thinking types are pretty scary really. I'm sure that this person runs around saying that jeezoos tells her to do things and whatnot. Freaky and sad.

I always advise 'lonely people' to be active and shape their future.

I have nothing for the "wait to be provided for" crowd.
