I hope this doesn't turn into something
Edited on Wed Aug-13-08 04:41 AM by MichaelHarris
It was a little over a year ago that we had the "Moscow Sniper" shoot up the sheriff's department in Moscow, Id. I'm a photojournalist in Pullman, Wa. and I also cover Moscow, just 9 miles away. I just overheard a police call about a man with an AR-15 slung on his back with a police scanner taped to his chest. The police questioned him and he said he was "patrolling". For the goofy part? They can't arrest him, he can carry that weapon through the streets of Moscow, Id. Right now he's walking in an area around the police station and a residential area just north, basically the same area the sniper "worked" last year.

Someone just got smart, they decided to relocate him and just observe his actions. I hope my night isn't interrupted, I hope the people of Moscow never know this happened on their streets. P.S., gun guys don't go all buck wild, your town didn't get shot up by some nut. Clean a gun or something for the next hour or so.

1. An armed society is a polite society
And I bet most people are remarkably polite around the idiot with the AR15.

Unfortunately the Heller ruling by the Supreme Court says gun ownership is an individual right. Just shows how backwards the gun control policy in the United States is in this day and age.

7. So does the Democratic party platform.
Unfortunately the Heller ruling by the Supreme Court says gun ownership is an individual right.

So does the Democratic party platform. So does 73% of the U.S. electorate and ~65% of registered Democrats, if Gallup polls are to be believed.

American adults with clean records have always had the right to own guns in this country, except in three or four cities that managed to pass near-total bans. You are certainly free not to own them, but we'll keep ours, thanks.

9. 50% plus one rules the day
A Zogby poll shows the majority of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents support off shore drilling.

http://www.zogby.com/news/ReadNews.dbm?ID=1519

Never mind the bad effects on our environment. Never mind weather it is right to drill or not to drill. The majority wants it, let's drill.

The majority of people want guns, never mind weather it is good or bad, let everybody own as many guns as they can afford.

I sure Bill Gwatney would agree with the majority, if he could.

10. Not "everybody," just mentally competent adults with clean records,
after passing a background check at the point of sale--and the guns have to be non-automatic, non-sound-suppressed small arms under .51 caliber (except shotguns) that meet the barrel length and overall length requirements of the National Firearms Act.

The beauty of living in a free country is that I'm allowed to make life choices that you don't agree with, and you're allowed to make life choices that I don't agree with, and as long as we both abide by the law then we just have to agree to disagree. You are perfectly free to choose not to own guns. A lot of us choose differently. That's what choice is all about.

Roughly the same percentage of the population (20%) supports banning guns as supports bringing back alcohol Prohibition. Neither is going to happen, thank goodness (and no, I don't drink).

6. This is a part of our sickness as a society
the fucking NRA compromised our elected officials and there you have it...violence, aggression and intimidation...the founding attributes of our current society. Western Europe which has very strict gun laws is much safer and the people there are more accomodating and respectful of each other.

8. The Swiss can own any gun we in the USA can, and some we can't...
Edited on Wed Aug-13-08 05:31 PM by benEzra
and the French can own most of them, FWIW. There is more red tape in some countries than others, but most of Europe is not the United Kingdom on the gun issue (and a lot of UK citizens travel to the Continent to go target shooting).

In most of Europe, the gun laws are less draconian than in Australia, never mind the UK.
