I grew up in a small steel town on the shores of Lake Erie. My father and mother were both solid Democrats. Dad worked two jobs: he was full-time at the steel plant and a full-time firefighter. Both were union jobs, and the unions were good to us.

We had a small house with one bathroom and no “formal” rooms. He was burly, and hairy and drank inexpensive beer. He played over-30 slow pitch with the guys in the local men’s club. They all brought the wives and kids to the local VFW Post and they took turns buying pitchers, while we played pinball and ran around.

They went to the plant every day, so their kids could go to college or trade school, so we could do better. They were all lower middle-class-working men. Some with union jobs - some without. Most moms stayed home, or worked part-time. They argued about football, their bosses, and any other subject that came up.

They were almost all Democrats. They raised a lot of children: some that became lawyers, some became drug-addicts, some had kids in high school, some got married later in life, some were gay, some were straight, some worked in the same steel plant until it closed, some joined the military, some opened bars. They were average people.

And average people don’t like self-appointed experts who sit on high and sneer at those below. Fuck Ann Coulter and the rest who attempt to use a wide-bigoted brush to paint all Democratic men as one thing they think Americans find distasteful.

Rough or refined, I love Democratic men. They are the majority of men in this country for a good reason - They were well-raised.

Republicans are the type of people who think they are better than the working man and that they deserve the rewards the democrats have carved out of this country. Name all the republican heroes who have fought to defend this country. There are some but you can count them on one hand.

A lot of people switch to "its-mine-and-you-can't-have-it" once they actually get enough to have a chunk go to taxes for programs which help those like who they once were.

Just because all (or, most) of the males here are liberal does not mean that all of the country is filled with liberal, Democratic men.

We barely won the Senate and House, and we still don't have enough of a majority to get anything done. And these wins only came after six years of Republican fuckups. So if we are going to actually make significant progress in 2008, we will need bigger wins in more areas, wider margins. The best way to do that is to go after the root of the way Republicans campaign. And one of the cores to their strategy is by playing up the macho toughguy angle, and calling anyone who doesn't fit that mold "faggot".

Its one thing to compliment the men here, and I sincerely appreciate the OP for doing so. But to assume that all of America feels this way is naive and extremely dangerous.

The 'Lecture' was mere feeding you with the truth of the matter, which it appears in the end you are unable to handle. One can still be conservative here and there and still be a burning liberal everywhere else. Myself, I find abortion to be vile and repugnant, based off of my religious beliefs and some personal experience. On the other hand, I see no reason to legally restrict women from having the procedure done. Am I a conservative? No. I'm a liberal who has a conservative opinion of something, but a liberal response to it.

If you mean being a straight guy who's happy he's straight and doesn't want to be called what he's not, well, dunno how that's "conservative". I don't want to be called gay - I also don't want to be called Swedish, and for the very same reasons. I'm neither gay or Swedish.

Frankly I figure someone calling me gay says more about the person using it as an insult in the first palce, though :)
