A Dem relative from AK weighs in on Sarah.
"I didn't vote for Sarah for governor, but since she won I have come to like her. Virtually everybody in Alaska likes her, she's very charismatic
and sees no need to suck up to the Alaskan republican establishment, the oil companies, etc. The fact that she is a creationist and a life-long
NRA member and stuff like that doesn't seem to enter into her governorship very much, although she did just come out against the Alaska clean water initiative (protecting salmon streams from mining runoff), and it was soundly defeated on Tuesday.

My feeling is that she will really appeal to a lot of people and give McCain an incredible boost. I think her selection was brilliant (and cynical). This is bad news for us Democrats."

FWIW.

1. thanks for that information.
i think she will definitely bring in the fundie vote -- the ones who are only concerned with outlawing abortion and teaching creationism in the schools. they don't care about the country -- only their own agenda. and there's a lot of them.

2. She sees no need to suck up to the oil companies because her husband
the oil man sits in on private meetings.

6. IMO that's the point we need to hammer home.
There are millions of nice people who are reasonably intelligent, charismatic, and in no way qualified to be president.

4. Alaska attempted to pass an act protecting streams from mine runoff, and it was defeated?
Holy crapoli!! And she opposed it? What the hell is to oppose? "I for one believe that all streams should flow at pH 2 with enormous burdens of heavy metals."

Thank God I have never had a reason to move to Alaska.

8. I don't get it either.
It's not even a money issue - fishing and tourism both bring in more money for AK than mining.

5. A charismatic hard core creationist . How wonderful for a free
democracy! Is she nuts to like her? Maybe. Have a beer with her but keep her out of government, please.

9. Dennis Kucinich is begging us to wake up. Charismatic or not,
She has no foreign policy experience. Either did George. How is that working? I would keep asking this question over and over. Because George was under the impression that this war was not nation building, but freeing Iraq. And that this country would greet us with open arms. They did not, and this is nation building. If this women is the next v.p. this is bad news for the whole country.

10. The only voters she will bring in
are those who were looking for an excuse to not vote for Obama in the first place. All she does is give them cover.

23. I agree.......
Just like Dobson endorsing McSame now......he only did it because there's an anti-choice person running with him. She will consolidate the fundie vote, no doubt. She will also alienate a lot of other voters who are still of the opinion that McSame is still a "maverick". He has proven, with this choice, that he is an opportunist! I do not believe that moderates will be impressed with Ms. Palin.

24. No sir. Not true at all.
I think a LOT of fundies were planning to stay home in November--they wouldn't vote for Obama because he's a Demoncrap LIEberal baby killing tax raising socialist pinko commie, and they wouldn't vote for McCain because he's unbaptized and got rich off Demon Alcohol. They CAN vote for Palin because she's one of them.

12. So in other words, she's like McCain but charismatic
which is exactly what he needs.

None of those positions contradict his own, so she will cost him no base. And the "charisma" factor will win some centrists who aren't paying attention.
