VOTER CAGING IS HAPPENING. Anyone here gotten an absentee ballot
from the McCain campaign. Report it immediately to your local election officials. Copy it and by all means report it!

2. Make copies! One for Obama's campaign, and one for election officials...
The original should either go to Obama's peeps, or locked up for safe keeping!

4. I doubt the campaign will be able to deal with this.
Better, find a local voters' rights group like votersunite.org and consult with them.

WE CANNOT ASSUME THE NATION DEMOCRATIC CAMPAIGN CAN INTERVENE. In any case, our votes are our responsibility. Get local!

17. "Get local!" Excellent advice!
But, we should share them at least online, so people everywhere can see the shit that's being pulled!

Scan it, photograph it, make it electronic any way you can and make it viral like that YouTube video of that damn kid who cried about Britney Spears!

8. I got an application for one from the McCain camp today ...
But I don't understand why it's an issue? Could they simply be encouraging early voting for McCain just after his post convention bump?

Did yours have a little box to check?
That is the problem, they are not the right ballots, as I
understand it if you don't check the box saying you're a
registered voter than it doesn't count. Someone tell us if I'm
wrong...

Check for the box...

14. and from what I've read, sometimes the return
envelope goes to a different county clerk, making it invalid. They have also sent them to people who have moved, or are snowbirds, with their old county clerk address. And they do seem to be targeting Democrats or people who've donated to Obama, at the very least.

12. it might not be what you think it is...
there is some evidence that these are just legitimate mailings providing "applications for absentee ballot" cards, not "absentee ballots" to voters. that would be no caging effort.

relax.

i understand the concern, but do we want to go all crazy like the last 24 hours here on du about some stupid rumor?

i have one of these mailing in my hand. it is totally legit. there are others that posted on du tonight about this. totally legit.

why don't we just wait for our outrage until a bogus mailing surfaces and is proven.

like a journalist would.

before we all start freaking out and getting all upset. how about that?

13. If the check-off box is unnecessary, why would it matter whether it is checked or not?
Doesn't seem like a legitimate reason to reject the application.

16. But, that's why it's there.
By adding a box that isn't approved, they've created an unapproved ballot.

They've created an illegitimate ballot.

18. Help!
I donate to Obama. My husband did not get one but I did. I see no box to check for if I am legal to vote. What box are you talking about. What if I do nothing. I don't want anything to do with these people. I live in a small town. What do I do. Are you saying that by sending me this they are preventing me from voting?

19. Please stop
saying that ballots are being sent!
Absentee (otherwise known as mail-in) APPLICATIONS are being sent - by all candidates, interest groups, county clerks, parties.
It is a way to encourage the vote-by-mail option , increase voter participation, and track those numbers.
This type of panicky mis-information is what could be harmful. Here in Colorado - there are at least 5 different APPLICATIONS for absentee hitting households this week.
Please stop - some of us are working hard on/for this. Look into it a bit more, please.

20. That is fine, if what is being sent out is correct. But what is being sent
out appears to be very misleading or confusing in order to disqualify potential democratic voters. Just want people to be aware of possible voting scams.
