Tell Congress that you are against the Wall St. bailout.
Congress main line
(202) 224-3121

Write your Representative

Write your Senators

Optional message for Democrats in Congress:

Bush has done a terrible job with money to rebuild Iraq.

Please do NOT give Bush money to rebuild corporations which made bad investments.

    Please vote against the bailout.

Optional message for Republicans in Congress:

It is not the proper role of government to bail out corporations which made bad investments.

Corporations should enjoy the benefits of their good investments and absorb their losses on bad investments.

    Please vote against the bailout.

We'll never get a better chance to force tough regulations on the credit industry than now.

11. This article describing the bill doesn't mention tough regulations...
...for the credit industry.

Please read this article and decide if whatever good is in the bill outweighs the $700 billion:

9. Based on what I've read about the bill,
...it won't regulate investment banks in a way which would stop them from creating as big a mess, again.

Please read this article, and if you decide that the amount of regulation in the bill isn't enough to make the billions worth it, then please write Congress against the bill:

3. I did, and look at the response my repub congressman sent:
here it is:

Thank you for contacting me with your comments regarding the bailout proposal. I appreciate the benefit of having your views on the issue.

I am trying to find a common sense market-based solution to this problem, as I believe we have to do something to avoid a total economic collapse. However, we have yet to see a legislative proposal regarding these issues.

I am working with the Republican leadership to try and find a way to solve this problem that will not put tax payers on the hook, does not reward the people who have caused this to occur, and one that will strengthen our economy.

I believe a sound economic and market-based solution is possible if we can get it considered by the Democratic leadership. They have blocked all of our efforts thus far. They seem to be playing politics with this issue, dragging it out over a long period of time. I even wonder if they actually want to see these severe economic problems to continue or maybe even get worse, thinking that it may help them politically.

We must put partisanship aside and find solutions to protect the hardworking American people. Rest assured that I will continue to work towards that end. Please let me know of any suggestions that you might have.

Thank you for contacting me with your thoughts and concerns,

Sincerely,

6. I would describe the response as "rushed" not "dragged out."
Legislation shouldn't be rushed.

Republican Ted Poe (R-TX) agrees with me on that:

"We have spent more time in Congressional hearings on steroids-in-baseball than we have in discussing this 700 billion ripoff of the American people."

Congress should have hearings and wait for a new president before passing major legislation.

19. Called my congresscritters this AM...
Apparently We, The People are extremely pissed off. The poor ladies who answered the phones are catching quite the earful from angry constituents. :yoiks:

I do try to be courteous...I didn't fly off the handle at them; they're just doing their jobs.
I asked them about this- if there had been a lot of folks calling in.
They're not only taking calls from a lot of very angry people, they're not at all happy about this situation either. :grr:

32. It would be bad politically for Democrats to vote for this without...
...at least 90% of Republicans in the House and Senate voting for it.

But in terms of policy, the cash-for-trash scheme isn't the way to go, period.

28. The definition of a private bank would be significantly altered
There would have to be layers of regulation set up, because in the end, the Federally Owned banking system would have to cover the smaller ones that seek licensing.

Let me put it this way - it would be easier to get a liquor license in Utah than it would to get a private banking license.

31. Ordinary Democrats and Republicans also came together...
Edited on Fri Sep-26-08 12:47 PM by Eric J in MN
...a couple of years ago to oppose a plan to regulate political message boards and blogs.

Sometimes ordinary people from both parties are right.

We won then.

I doubt we'll win in stopping the bailout, but we should try to stop the bailout.
