Will the world end this weekend?
If the Congress does not bail out the credit markets and Wall Street? What's the worst we can expect Monday morning? Will the locusts block out the sun? Will the moon turn to blood?

Will all money transactions across America cease? Will all the banks close their doors? Will there be a rush on gas stations and grocery stores? What do you anticipate will happen if Congress does not act.

We have been primed to expect the very worst. What is your realistic prediction?

3. I dare say that the majority of the people in this country
don't even know about the "crisis". The country would have to explode before most of them realized a major castotrophe had occurred.

4. Banks will throw hissy fits
and in fact have already started to do so. Some have stopped issuing loans of all types, including new credit cards. HELOCs are frozen.

However, since this is how they rake in the big bucks, it won't last long. If you need to borrow, just put the plans on hold for a couple of months or so.

This too shall pass. Anybody who's ever been constipated knows that.

13. The world won't
I've read where people are out buying up food supplies, etc..

I'm still just curious at this point.

I don't think government is telling the people everything (by not being completely honest). I also think that in several months to a year, the full impact of what government isn't telling will outrage (some) people even more than they are now.

Course, by then it will be too late. Either way...bailout or no bailout...the truth will come too late.

18. I thought it already ended with the Millenium Bug.
Realistically? More wringing of hands, gnashing of teeth, and more attempts to scare the people into paying the bankers and politicians more to "save us".

19. I honestly hope there is not a plan today. I hope they adjourn and then spend a couple of weeks
debating what to do. Let it go until mid-October. Call them on their bluff. The world will not implode. We will all not lose our jobs. Retirees won't starve. A few fat cat Wall Street exec's may lose their jobs, but it beats going to jail like they should. Seriously. I want them to prove to me that greedy wall street execs not getting my tax dollars to save them will truly ruin my life somehow. Maybe in the short term--I won't be able to buy a new car this year but I wasn't planning on it anyway.

but not the most likely outcome.

If there are more bank failures, the Fed will probably step in individually like it has so far.

21. No
This problem took 20+ years to develop. Fixing in a week is unlikely to prevent any major issues in the medium or long term future. And fixing it, while it certainly needs to be done, should be done right.

So, if they do nothing and there is a collapse, it would have happened anyway within weeks. If they do something and it doesn't really fix the underlying causes, we could see the same result anyway.

And remember, there have been folks predicting economic doom every time something serious occurred, for the last 25 years.

Remember the S&L crisis? Pretty darned bad. No catastrophic economic effect.

Remember when Gingrich, Gramm, and DeLay said the Clinon tax increases would create an economic catastophe? No such thing occurred.

All of sudden, the doom and gloom crowd are going to be right?
The Professor
