Believe Gov. Palin has a learning disorder - processing/memory storage
Won't matter how much they prepare Sarah Palin, she will not able to process the information, store it and retrieve it for later usage. Why do I think so? Because I have a daughter with the same problems. Palin's speech patterns could also be explained by a learning disorder as is the constant presence of the First Dude - he has to interpret for her. She may be very intelligent but she probably cannot memorize well (retrieval and storage problems with the information)and it explains why she says things that leave most people with their mouths open wondering - Huh? If Biden knows this, he can feed into it and get her to say just about anything he wants. She won't remember the talking points if she is distracted and will get mixed up even if not distracted. The Republican campaign must know this by now. So much for vetting. There is nothing they can do to fix it so they must make sure she never gets to debate anyone. Get her to talk freely about her beliefs. The more she talks the more it is apparent that she cannot process information, turn it around and make a coherent statement that is on point. She is "feeling" her way through life and its problems because she cannot think her way through.

1. That's why you need to use a multiple-core processor when building a robotic governor.

2. That would explain all those schools. She can't get a simple
sentence out most of the time.

7. Agree. Need to look at her school years to test hypothesis.
My daughter is in special ed. Instead of looking at Sarah Palin's adult life, perhaps it would be more productive to look at Sarah's school years to understand her. I worry about what my daughter will be able to do as an adult. Never thought about her being President. Hmmm.

19. My son has some processing issues that pretty much ended
his academic career. He's an artist. I don't think he'd like a career in politics. :)

3. She appears to do a pretty good job as long as she has a teleprompter.
Speaking on her own, or actually using brain power doesn't work for her at all! The only intelligible things I've heard her say were one or two words and no ore! The response to the reporter of "Great!" when she was asked how the meeting with Kissinger went was the best she can do.

5. Sorry your daughter has this problem, too. I read a comment
from someone in Alaska that said that her incoherent rambling is nothing new to them. They called her "incurious". They love(d) her anyway. There's no excuse for propelling her onto the national scene, though. Now, even the conservatives are raising their eyebrows. They're grateful for this week's "Gustav", keeping her off the front page.

Are you able to teach your daughter coping skills that compensate for her problem?

9. She tries to cover her disabilities but they show through
My daughter is old enough to know she has problems and tries to cover but she cannot get around the processing problem. The wrong words come out and she gets so frustrated because she knows she is not saying what she wants to say. We've tried everything and still try. She has teachers at school and teachers who come to the house. It was the last interview with Katie Couric that clued me into Sarah Palin having, I believe, the same problem. My daughter has short term memory problems and I suspect Sarah does also. My daughter cannot remember what she had for lunch today but can remember yesterday's lunch. If I am correct and the Obama campaign picks up on this, they can own the debate without making a fool out of Sarah. But, if they go on the attack, it may backfire. Feed her some lines and let her speak out on them and then gently get her to contradict herself. Sarah will do so while smiling and feel safe enough to express herself in that "what did she say" way.

14. Short term recall problem might be a better description. It sounds like
she is coding it in, but has a harder time recalling items on a short term basis. MAybe the memory needs to be IN her longer for it to become a part of longer term memory available for recall. I wonder if this could be helped nutritionally, like with DHA and EPA.

I'm rambling. I'm sorry. My oldest is autistic. Years ago I studied cognition and memory in a grad program. I can identify with your daughter's frustration and your concerns as a parent. I hope for the best for her and you and her education.

11. My buffer runneth over, also.
Sometimes I even type ahead. Sometimes I get stuck trying to pick the right word. I don't like memorizing, I like understanding.

But I'm not trying to run for public office.

8. Why would someone handicapped in such a way pursue a journalism/communication degree?
Perhaps these mental issues have developed or worsened since leaving college.

13. Absolutely. Not a hard major if personally charming and pretty.
Do not need to be on the dean's list. Going to 6 schools to get that degree helps. Reading from a teleprompter works fine.

If she cannot retrieve information she cannot be expected to perform at a high level job. I don't know what she is doing in an executive position. From the sound of it she functions on a petty personal level and not an intellectual level- she does not evaluate people by their skills, but by how they suck up to her.

18. She was "good" in an executive position in AK because she's personable and a good politician
Edited on Fri Sep-26-08 12:41 PM by fed_up_mother
There has to be something to her that is genuinely likable. Even though four of her five best friends don't appear to be voting for her, they are genuinely fond of her.

However, even as mayor of a small town, she needed a city manager. That should have been Gramp's first clue that Gidget couldn't do this job!

23. Yeah, I think it was giving over $1,000 to each Alaskan resident
that helps in the popularity contest. From what I've read her polling there is sinking now from the 80's to the 60's, which isn't bad but still rather a quick dip and probably not going to stop.
