American's satisfaction at all-time low: 9% (Gallup)
PRINCETON, NJ -- Presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain are set to meet for the second presidential debate in Nashville Tuesday night at a time when only 9% of Americans are satisfied with the way things are going in the United States -- the lowest such reading in Gallup Poll history.

The previous low point for Gallup's measure of satisfaction had been 12%, recorded back in 1979, in the midst of rising prices and gas shortages when Jimmy Carter was president. Gallup has recorded a 14% satisfaction level at several points -- once in the senior Bush's administration in 1992, and several times earlier this year.

The reason for Americans' extraordinarily low level of satisfaction is straightforward: the economy. Asked in the weekend Gallup Poll to name the most important problem facing the country today, almost 7 in 10 Americans mentioned some aspect of the economy, far ahead of any other problem mentioned.

4. Not exactly
It goes down under a Bush, you can see that Reagan's terms moved the number up. However, it's obvious that people ~really~ didn't like the idea of Clinton being in office at first.

6. They haven't done well this year

I've lost about a third of what I had this time last year. Oh, don't worry, it's only numbers and my income has remained constant, but it's disheartening to see those numbers going down even though I knew they were illusory.

A lot of those GOP multimillionaires have also lost a third of what they had. Don't kid yourself about hiding things offshore, the whole world is getting hammered this time. Even if they've got those tax dodge accounts in offsore banks, they're worth a lot less than they once were by virtue of what's happening in currency markets and just think of what will happen with those non insured accounts when they all start a run on those banks.

What the graph above demonstrates very clearly is that people think things are worse now than they were under Carter, probably the most unfairly vilified president of the last century. That's bad, folks, and it means the GOP hasn't got a hell residing snowball's chance of getting back in unless they try to cancel the election and appoint themselves, and something tells me that wouldn't last long.

Even the rich can't save the GOP and they know it. The GOP can't save the rich, so what good are they now?
