Poll question: Phillies or Rays?
Edited on Mon Oct-20-08 10:43 AM by JackRiddler
POLL: Who are you rooting for?

THREAD: Are you a fan of either prior to this postseason? What's your playful sociopolitical spin on the matchup? What impact will it have on the election?

(Mods, please allow this thread. To many of us, the World Series is always Big History of the Republic.)

Teams listed in order of league seniority.

1. I voted for the Rays...
not because I care about them at all, but because I'm a bitter Mets fan who does not want to see the Phillies do well.

Maybe next year. I love the Mets/Phils rivalry. Those are always my favorite games to attend. Although they're both NL teams and can't compete for the big one.

Thanks to you and all those pulling for the Phils who have reasons not to!! :applause:

was that the Sox will be in it every year, and the Yankees won't. The Yankees didn't win either since 2000, but they were a superpower. No more.

13. Uhmm, beacuse of Thunderstorms
In the summer, practically every afternoon we have tremendous violent thunderstorms with lightning and heavy rain.

Too many games would have to be canceled if they played in an open air stadium.

If you wear a glove in your hand, you need to hold a bat at the plate. Plain and simple. I'm sorry if some get too old to compete in the game the way it was intended to be played. Too bad. Get a job in broadcasting.

most democratic city...except when the Packers play and then I root for them no matter what because it is the only team that is even partly owned by the PEOPLE of the city they play in. I firmly believe that if sports teams take their city's names. then the city should be entitled to the revenue. In other words I think sports teams should be municipalized. (Yes, I know that isn't a word..I just made it up) Also I really want this series to go to six games..it would mean more viewership for the Obama address.

45. Packers fans are the best.
I recall we (the Dolphins) played them in 2000 and the Packers fans (there zillions of them!) all had Gore/Lieberman bumper stickers on their backs.

Besides that, they are always the most well behaved at an away game. Unlike certain fans from a certain gang green team from Jersey, who play in another team's stadium and always seem to be wearing an extra shirt under their team colors, just in case things don't go their way.

18. According to Kristol, the Rays beating the Sox mean Obama wins
My wife was flipping channels and caught him on Faux saying that the Rays were like Obama, a young new team but couldn't finish strong. He predicted that the Red Sox would win the last game and that McCain would stage a last minute rally to win the presidency. Sox fans probably lost hope after this prediction since William Kristol's record of being wrong is the most extensive in all of punditry. It may have contributed to the win by my home town team by demoralizing the Red Sox.

25. I'm with the Phillies for strictly personal reasons
The first year he was with the Minnestoa Twins Charlie Manuel lived in the same apartment building as my family and he, and another Twin who lived there, used to play catch with my brother and give him tickets to games. A really nice thing for a major league player to do for a little boy whose dad had recently died. So, I have a soft spot for Manuel (and don't tell me if he's turned into a butt-head since then, I don't want to know.)

NL is known (to fossils) as the "Senior Circuit," having started a couple of decades earlier than the "Junior Circuit" AL (i.e., back in the 19th effin century).

;)

Of course there is a real, tangible difference: AL has the Abomination.

And some Christians have indeed attributed their success to that, but I don't know if the Rays themselves are a God Squad team or just figured a shorter name = easier marketing.

My Uncle ran their ticket office in the 1960's and 70's, and worked with the farm system as far back as the late 1940's.

I see no spin to take, these are 2 teams who were given little chance to make it into the post-season, and had the Phils not been the NL team, I'd be rooting for the Rays. Cinderellas in sports always get to me ;)

Great team, great year, great baseball!! The league championship series against the Astros was almost better than the WS ... it was painfully exciting.

Because the city of Philadelphia needs some brotherly love. (No city championships since 1983, and a number of heartbreakers in the years since, too.) And the State of Florida just has had altogether too many championships of late. Sorry, Rays fans. Nothing personal. Way to kick the AL East in the ass this year, though!

Other than that, I've been to Tampa years ago, and it was pretty cool. However, I've been to PA more recently than FL, and had a great time in PA. But, I was only in Pittsburg, so maybe that shouldn't engender Philadelphia loyalty...

Put me down as a 'Don't Care' - just give us a good series so the baseball fans don't have to mope about all morose and whiny until April...
