Former president (Poppa Bush) faces hecklers in Lawrence (KS)
LAWRENCE | As his son’s presidency winds down, former President George H.W. Bush faced a few anti-war hecklers Sunday at the University of Kansas.

The nation’s 41st president came to the university to receive the 2008 Leadership Prize from the Dole Institute of Politics.

He touched on a wide range of topics, including the current Iraq war and the previous one he oversaw.

But anti-war hecklers interrupted him three times. When one protester was admonished to be civil, he shouted back, “There’s nothing civil about war or war crimes.”

Security escorted out about a half dozen people from the audience of about 2,000.

Later Bush said, “These guys yell at me, it doesn’t bother me anymore.”

1. What's with the "hippie" obssession?
Also, why couldn't Bush have visited in August of '63 (1863, that is)?

2. he gave us W.
merely by his existence. I wonder what Bush Sr. obituaries will look like soon. I will be prepared to write diaries here and on other blogs about what he gave us, how Perot did NOT cause his loss, as most papers will be sure to try to say, etc. He was an awful President, possibly the most forgettable in the last 30 years. He was the ultimate status quo President in every way imaginable. He didn't even try to reform anything, at least Clinton tried with health care, did get welfare reform, and ended multiple conflicts, like Bosnia, Kosovo, and played a part in the Northern Ireland peace process. Bush Sr. merely invaded Panama after being made to look like an idiot, overthrowing Noriega after discovering they laundered coke many for many years, including that of George Jung.

4. "...we would be chased down in the streets and lynched."
..."Sarah, if the American people had ever known the truth about what we Bushes have done to this nation, we would be chased down in the streets and lynched." --- George Bush Sr. 1992

I'm having trouble finding what this is actually in direct reference too, either drug nonsense or Iran-Contra, but I think it's generally applicable to all he did for the country.

7. "sHOULD OF SHOT ALL YOU RED LEGS DURING THE CW. "
I copied that from the "talk back" comments. A rather brilliant response to the story. Scratch a Republican, find a Confederate. Wow, just wow.

8. I alerted on that comment
Should be deleted here in a bit.

The history here - KS was a free state, MO slave. Before the civil war, they had bands of armed men riding across the state line, grabbing people and taking them back across the state line and hanging them. Happened in both states. And there were several big Civil War battles fought here in KC.

And yes, some locals are STILL fighting the Civil War here. It's ridiculous. There is a horrible rivalry between KS and MO.

9. Never ever forget that the ....
Bush family is a crime family. Never ever should we allow a member of the Bush family to hold any public office including dog catcher ever again.

12. It's good to hear that Poppy Bush is getting some public razzing for a change. He's the
Chief Fascist In Charge. Junior's just the dumbass front man to keep the family name in the history books. Too bad they'll be reaming Dubya a new one.

What is the "war mongers and young republicans" thing about?

13. They closed the comments
They were pages and pages of crap like this:

Typical lib's...always yelling and acting out and don't know how to act in public. How many people interrupted the Democratic National Convention - zero. How many interrupted the Republican National Convention - many. They're simply uncouth whiners that continue to alienate thinking people. I don't think much of Bill Clinton, but if he were speaking to my school, I either simply wouldn't go listen to him, or I would listen without interrupting him. I might ask him a tough questions, but would at least be civil enough to let him answer questions and speak his point.

The obamabots expect a nonpartisan country now that the furor is in power?? They might want to look at themselves first.

My god Lawrence, learn some friggin class. Yes, we all know you are all a bunch of dope smoking hippies, but do you ever give it a rest? Yes, we know you live and breath politics, but showing up and heckling a former President is completely childish and lame...Get a life losers..

Why do these people who cry about war crimes never once look at Saddam Hussein record of mass murder of 700,000. These morons never acknowlege Saddam Hussein invasion of Iran, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, or the ICBM missle attack at Isreal and Saudi Arabia which killed people. Why don't these hippies morons ask the people of Iraqi if they rather have Saddam Hussein back or the United States Arm forces.

Saddam should have been taken out for attacking and occupying parts of Kuwait, having rape and torture rooms and for disobeying all those UN resolutions. Let's not forget he released all that oil in the Gulf during his retreat and killed thousands of birds and other animals. I don't care if he didn't have WMDs.

14. Why are they called hecklers? That is so condescending.
They're not interrupting a comedian, they're calling out the father of a war criminal and a war criminal in his own right.

i was a KU grad student when Clarence Thomas came to visit the law school, and there was no protest at all (although it was a STRICTLY closed, invite only visit -- all media, including the school paper were shut out, iirc)
