The Anti-Grinch
Okay, so I'm not a Christmas-hater. So sue me. But I'm going to tell you about my Christmas tree anyway, so if that's going to put your shorts in a twist go away now.

My ornaments are special. Each one has a story behind it, and if you spent a week or two at my place I could tell you each and every story. And I could tell you stories about each of the people who gave me those ornaments over the years. I could tell you about the ones that adorn the topmost branches, those ornaments that first adorned my parents' first Christmas tree in 1943 and that I remember hanging on the tree when I was only three. I can tell you about the tiny stocking that was given by a friend who later decided that drugs were more important than living. You can easily find the little bird whose glitter has almost all fallen off, one of four that Mom had gotten way back when, one for each of her kids. There's a little bear that has no resemblance to a Christmas ornament, but it's been on every tree since it fell off the mobile that used to entertain a beloved foster child. You get the idea.

Every year I add a decoration or two that are reminders of some person or event from the year. This year's addition is very simple. It's right there, just about halfway up, next to the dove, tucked in just so where one of the tiny lights can illuminate it. It's flat and round and dark blue and has white letters that say "Yes We Did!" Somehow, I don't think I'm going to have to explain that one.

Merry, indeed.

3. That sounds like my tree.
Now and then, when my kids help decorate, I talk about each ornament as we place it on the tree. When they were teenagers, they used to roll their eyes.

Yes, my twenty-something children sometimes come home for a weekend and help me decorate. They help make cookies, too. We have a lot of traditions here.

I, too, buy a new ornament or two every year. I don't have one yet for this year.

4. I love a sentimental tree.
You have the right idea. Thanks for sharing!
