1 in 5 young adults has a personality disorder !
CHICAGO (AP) -- Almost one in five young American adults has a personality disorder that interferes with everyday life, and even more abuse alcohol or drugs, researchers reported Monday in the most extensive study of its kind.

The disorders include problems such as obsessive or compulsive tendencies and anti-social behavior that can sometimes lead to violence. The study also found that fewer than 25 percent of college-aged Americans with mental problems get treatment.

9. Well...
When you define "normal" as happy, well-adjusted, and generally immune to stressors 100% of the time, you might as well make it 99 in 100.

Oh, wait. That was pretty cynical. I must have a personality disorder.

12. the people who don't have personality disorders are the ones who haven't been to a doctor yet

The primary requirement for a diagnosis of "personality disorder" is having good insurance.

6. Call me a cynic, but guess who gives out those grants to places like
Columbia University and the New York Psychiatric Institute. Big Pharma. I know this because I have a friend who is working on such a grant right now, at the NYPI. I cannot assume the same for the other two groups who gave grants for this study, but it would not surprise me to find Big Pharma in there somewhere.

The study was funded with grants from the National Institutes of Health, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the New York Psychiatric Institute.

Instead of trying to repair the conditions that cause the problems, whether personal or societal, the solutions seem to include prescribing enough drugs so the person is no longer bothered by the situation. SOMA anyone?

10. Well, a higher percentage of adults think Dubya has done a good job.
So it appears that a higher percentage of older adults must have a personality disorder than do younger adults. ;-)

17. Hmm I'm skeptical
First, young adults - particularly teenagers - have some temporary behaviors they generally (and hopefully!) grow out of when they mature that could be confused with symptoms of psychological disorders.

Second, I wonder if they're just trying to drum up business.

23. I doubt that this is any higher now than it would have been ...
... at any time in history, if measured by the same criteria. Face it, a lot of behaviors that were considered "normal" in the past, have been redefined as "disorders" of some sort.
