Missouri lawmaker wants to ban beer bongs and beads to curb rowdy behavior on rivers

JEFFERSON CITY | A state lawmaker is trying to dampen the party on some of Missouri’s popular floating streams.

Newly proposed legislation would ban beer bongs, Jell-O shots, kegs and beaded Mardi Gras necklaces on Missouri rivers.

The bill by Sen. Delbert Scott, R-Lowry City, was among the first filed Monday as lawmakers began proposing measures for the 2009 legislative session. It has the general support of the Missouri State Water Patrol.

“Without a doubt, some of our floating streams in Missouri have a good amount of lewd behavior — a Mardi Gras-type atmosphere,” said Water Patrol Maj. Tommy Roam, “and there has been discussion from both representatives and senators in trying to come up with a way to curb some of that behavior.”

The rowdiness is concentrated generally along the popular canoeing and rafting streams of the Ozarks.

The target is not the casual floater who sips a can of beer, which would still be allowed. Rather, the bill is aimed at objects that encourage drunkenness, “fighting, solicitation of nudity, obscene language or other lewd behavior.”

Mardi Gras necklaces are frequently used as currency at parties where revelers exchange them for nudity.

1. Oh, the howwow...
of young people floating down the river and having fun being...well...young.

Look, Clem...that girl there...she just showed her titties!

Where, Cletus?

Well, she done floated down the river. You really missed something there.

Damn! That ought not be allowed, I say.

3. It really is a problem
We stopped going floating in MO a couple years ago because of a weekend we were bombarded with water cannons and saw a guy almost die after another guy hit him over the head with a paddle. And the trash was just horrendous.

It's one thing having fun and another thing being an ass and ruining a beautiful river.

5. We saw the same problem long ago in Atlanta
On the Chattahoochee river that runs through here.

There's always a certain percentage of immature jerks who ruin it for everyone.

I was usually off with the stoners, the last thing we wanted to do was attract attention. :D

10. Stay away from the "popular" floats,
The Current and Jack's Fork during the summer. Go to some of the lesser know rivers and streams, they're just as beautiful and much less crowded. The only time I hit the Current and Jack's Fork is in the fall, around October. The cool weather drives off the party floaters, and a fall float is just absolutely stunning.

12. It's usually easier for us to go in the summer
We used to do the Niangua every year. It was closer to KC and more family oriented. Then it got crazy. Two years ago we went to Eminence and it was the craziest float trip we had ever had. Much worse than Niangua.

14. Yes, it is bad.
Last float trip I was on was 4 summers ago on the Meramec River.

- I got to see some people having sex on the river bank.

- A boat full of people came by & we chatted a bit, then someone asked if we wanted to buy some crystal meth.

Not really a family friendly activity, which is a shame, people should be able to enjoy nature peacefully. Save the debauchery for Mardi Gras or somethinglike that.

I mean, if the state legislature has time to waste on bullshit like this, things must be AWESOME there!

4. I support a ban on beerbongs.
Beer is meant to be guzzled, not pumped down one's throat.

13. If I remember right from college, a beer bong is essentially a funnel and a tube.
You want to ban those?

11. Probably bombarded with requests to fix this problem
The floaters don't like the craziness, neither do the business owners or the water patrol (who can't begin to keep up with the insanity).

7. Not a beer drinker here.
What the hell is a beer bong?

And . . . I'll have you know I EARNED every damned one of my mardi gras beads in New Orleans AT mardi gras. "Solicitation of nudity?" For shame!

9. Ahh!
Thank you. Did pretty much the same thing in Jamaica except with snorkel equipment and margaritas.
