What the Hell is going on with Levi's commercials?
If I ever saw one of their latest ad executives in public, I'd punch a dent in their face. The only "message" I'm seeing from these ad's are,

"C'mon kids, take your pants off. Wherever, whenever, just get naked and screw..."

I think one of the ones I saw recently was these two little "super-models" break into someones apartment and start going at each other. To me, that's a first-class invitation to a skinny kid ass kicking. What the fuck are these assholes trying to convey to young, dumb, impressionable sheeple these days? Fer Chrissake! I'm not that old, or P.C., and even I find these commercials offensive. "Live Unbuttoned"? Button your fucking pants, or I'll put my foot in you ass!

rant off...

2. You're not supposed to think that, silly consumer...
You're supposed to watch the daring club girl unbutton her jeans and go "Mmmm, panties..." as you realize just how daring she and her boyfriend are as they break into the house of a cop. Oooh, aren't they just so precocious?

I think I'll place another order to Union Jeans, instead. Damn good jeans - made in the USA by union labor.

There's also Diamond Cut Jeans, which are perfect for some body types and still headquartered in Texas. Only problem is that all the actual sewing is now done in Mexico.

If you don't like the ads don't buy the products. I find almost all commercials offensive, but it usually isn't the crazy over the top ads that piss me off.

Edited on Tue Dec-02-08 07:42 PM by DutchLiberal
So quit complaining!

And yes, this is a true story. On commercial tv stations (which doesn't mean it's pay-tv), after about 11 PM, commercials pop up with images of nude girls whom you can call to have sex! Some of them are called "home shopping".

Now THAT is annoying. And you complain about a jeans commercial?

46. Peer pressure sells too. If you were with your peers, you were popular.
Which explains why a gaggle of 17 old girls made a pact to get pregnant together, how two teenage girls, would want to get knocked up, and so on.

Sex is one thing. Context is another. and I will not ignore stereotypes and their impact on peer pressure either. While we're being "liberal", forget mentioning relevant contexts and we end up with anarchy. We claim to care about others, but the usual gibber of throwing out condoms DOES help enforce "as long as I wear this, it doesn't matter and neither does the other person and their feelings".

And I will not apologize.

"Which explains why a gaggle of 17 old girls made a pact to get pregnant together"

It turned out the whole thing was not true. Several girls happened to get pregnant, they promised each other moral support in their pregnancies. Crazy, whacko principal hatched a story about a "pact" and all the knee jerk prudes ran away with the story.

15. I think that's what get me about these ad's
We're all "Up in arms" about teen pregnancy, yet many of the kids in these ad's are pretty much just that. Kids. The recent one I saw where the "kids" were taking their clothes off to go swimming, (read fornicating), appear to be no more than 16. I know it goes on, and as a parent there's not much you can do to prevent it. If it's going to happen, it's going to happen. But I don't need fucking Levi's pushing the issue.

The few times we watch TV, I turn the sound down and I often switch over to another station so my kids won't see the constant barrage of messages. It's not just the sex, it's also the "you're a loser if you don't have one of these!" ads.

(And this is not a statement about the homeless - an issue for which I have great concern.)

51. Quite. And as much as everyone wants to blame the parents*, let me edify the dunderheads:
Edited on Tue Dec-02-08 04:36 PM by HypnoToad
Peer pressure does far more to children where parents, no matter how hard they try, cannot reach.

Unless kids are reminded the difference between what's thrown out in the media and how sex should be dealt with, kids will blindly think the media is the sole reality.

I wish I had the words to better my case, but meanwhile let's all go back to:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385x246110
Amongst other shallow and brainlessly written videos, pamphlets, product inserts, et cetera, that would otherwise play into stereotypes rather than encouraging breaking them.

Sex should be more than just getting one's jollies off, wearing a doggie balloon or otherwise. Respect for others; do we as Democrats no longer care about each other? Apparently not. The new mantra is "Wham, bam, thanks much and get tested for every disease and critter every 6 months." And then wonder why disease rates and pregnancies (unwanted or irresponsibly obtained) keep going up, D-U-friggin'-H.

And, what the heck, I'll add this:

* Depending on the parents and how they act around their children, some parents deserve more blame than others. That's a case by case argument, but peer pressure and the media ARE legitimate factors and rarely, if ever, get mentioned.

if you don't think this has been happening for the last 10-20,000 years or so, just take a recent example (relativly) when a young girl came to her father and said unto him "lo, pops I art lateith, and it was an angel who did it, yeah THAT's the ticket!".

Sex is not a bad thing if you give them the info they need early and make sure they are never ever in an abstinece only program.

181. I think it's funny watching stuff like this with my teens. I must be cruel.
It's complete torture for them. They really really want to identify with those kids jumping into the lake in their underwear, but it's like "Bleccccccccchhhhhhhhhh! This is so embarrassing with my parents sitting here in the room! OMG."

You can almost hear the gears in their heads grinding against one another, like trying to jam a car into "park" while it's still rolling.

I haven't seen the wayward house sitter commercial with them, but I'd probably say something like "I sure hope they brought condoms."

My parents were never afraid to talk about sex. Even as little kids my siblings and I understood the mechanics of sex, and we knew adults thought it was fun. We knew about birth control and STDs and quite a bit about relationships long before adolescence addled our brains.

None of us got into trouble with our sexuality. My mom was a lot more worried about us riding motorcycles then she was about sex.

At the age of the kids in the Levis commercial, I'd jumped into lakes a few times with girls, wearing our underwear or less, and it never ended with sex. Nudity was mostly silliness. The great terror of being a guy at that age is that you will start thinking about sex too much and everyone will know it, most especially the girl who is trying to provoke it. Teenage guys really don't like to be so utterly powerless.

So far it looks like my wife and I have done a good job teaching our kids about sex, most especially thanks to my wife who has no trouble at all talking about any aspect of sex and sexuality. My kids most common reaction to sex talks these days is "Way... Too... Much... Information!" and if they think they know enough already they probably do.

related to sex with them (I was a nurse, after all), but watching scenes of a sexual nature in movies and on TV when we're all together...pretty embarrassing all around. Most of the time I'll say something like "Geez Louise, put some clothes on, lady" or some such little joke. I'm old-fashioned, can't help it.
Edit to add: my worst anticipated nightmare as an adolescent was "the talk" from my parents--it ended up involving nothing more than hygiene and menstruation, thank God.

119. WTF? Maybe he picked her up in a place where girls are not girls?
And guys are not guys... so what?

I met her in a club down in old Soho
where you drink champagne and it tastes just like Cherry Cola
C-O-L-A Cola.
She walked up to me and she asked me to dance.
I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said, "Lola"
L-O-L-A Lola, lo lo lo Lola
Well, I'm not the world's most physical guy,
but when she squeesed me tight she nearly broke my spine
Oh my Lola, lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo Lola
Well, I'm not dumb but I can't understand
why she walks like a woman and talks like a man
Oh my Lola, lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo Lola
Well, we drank champagne and danced all night,
under electric candlelight,
she picked me up and sat me on her knee,
She said, "Little boy won't you come home with me?"
Well, I'm not the world's most passionate guy,
but when I looked in her eyes,
I almost fell for my Lola,
Lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo Lola
I pushed her away. I walked to the door.
I fell to the floor. I got down on my knees.
I looked at her, and she at me.
Well that's the way that I want it to stay.
I always want it to be that way for my Lola.
Lo lo lo Lola.
Girls will be boys, and boys will be girls.
It's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world,
except for Lola. Lo lo lo Lola. Lo lo lo Lola.
Well I left home just a week ago,
and I never ever kissed a woman before,
Lola smiled and took me by the hand,
she said, "Little boy, gonna make you a man."
Well I'm not the world's most masculine man,
but I know what I am and that I'm a man,
so is Lola.
Lo lo lo Lola. Lo lo lo Lola.

Commercials, like most things on tv, are fiction. If kids can't distinguish between fiction and reality, that's the fault of the parents. Don't blame tv for all of society's faults. That's sooooo 1990's.

I know...

That said, commercials are fiction, I WRITE fiction... and MOST kids can distinguish between that and reality.... that said, the TREND of having commercials where crimes occur and it's ok is a problem... just like there is a problem with the glorification of war in the media...

By the way... I have no issue with the sex... time for this country to get over its puritan past.

But I have a problem with breaking and entering, I have a problem with assault... that is two commercials, one for jeans, the other for a car rental company.

You ok with that? Or are we just too damn puritan about that too? And we should have no issues with the projection of crime as a cool thing...

THEY ARE MAKING BREAKING AN ENTERING COOL... GOT IT? HOW BADLY HAS SEX BEEN USED TO SELL PRODUCT? LOOK FOR A MARLBORO PACK, FOR EXAMPLE, AND DECODE THE SEXUAL MESSAGE... You wonder why American business is failing? It's not simply that Detroit makes crappy cars. It's ad campaigns like this one that only incidentally promote the stuff they're trying to sell. Like putting Britney Spears in a Pepsi ad - Pepsi isn't sex, especially not cheap preteen sex, it's a soft drink. Sheesh.

They aren't designed to work on your intellect, they are designed to work on the emotions, much more difficult to ignore for most people.

Obviously this ad has garnered an emotional response from some viewers.

The important thing is to sell the jeans. If the whole driving force is to discard the jeans, why wear jeans in the first place? I fully expect Lewis Black to talk about this, and to suggest that instead of wearing jeans, you should wear a big piece of kraft paper that you can discard much easier.

101. Bye... I Am 15 And Have To Go Have Sex Now Because of a Levis Ad
Edited on Wed Dec-03-08 09:11 AM by AccessGranted
Don't you think that if a teenager is so weak-minded and gullible as to be influenced and driven to have sex because of the power of a Levis jeans ad that something has gone horribly awry in his or her psyche? Perhaps their ability to define their own uniqueness is out of whack. They may have self-esteem issues or body image issues. They may be the type to fall into peer pressure. They may simply be naive and foolish or maybe they were already excited by being promiscuous or the idea of it, if they are not yet sexually active.

You're worrying about slutty jeans ads when most public schools and seemingly nice communities are filled with drug dealers even in the most affluent areas and many kids often get seduced by much older individuals. Don't underestimate the power of the minds of today's teens and young adults. Not only that, did you ever stop and think that if a kid is that foolish and weak, then their parent's made some boo-boos in teaching, guiding and communicating with the kid? Is that Levis fault?

I don't think teenagers NEED a commercial as an excuse to decide sex is something they might want to do.
Their bodies give them all sorts of hormonal hints already.

Our current civilized culture is one of the few that extends marriageability age as far as we do. In other cultures through history, basically as soon as a woman COULD reproduce she was married off or mated or what have you.

Not saying that's right, but I'm saying I think biologically, teenagers are hormonally driven to be horny, and there's nothing except societal risk assessment that prevents that.

Yes, it counts on everyone thinking the obvious, then being fooled. Duh--it is not going to get my daughter to buy Levi's. (Well, she will if they start making them in the US again.) Of course, the ad could work because SOMEONE is finally publicly acknowledging the reality of teen thoughts without running away in screaming fear!

Edited on Wed Dec-03-08 02:21 PM by EnviroBat
Your opinion is a worrisome to me as a cloudy day. I don't wast energy on being "offended" by folks like you. The commercial offends me, because the message is stupid. So is your disruption of rational dialog on this thread, but it doesn't offend me.

I don't think America is as sexually prudish as many may maintain, as we tend to package it, sell it, purchase it, view it, read it, listen to it, dress for it, make ourselves up for it, advertise it, sing about it, self-medicate for it, etc.

I imagine it's the raison d'être for many businesses and even more individuals. It seems to me that out of ten television commercials, three sell cars, three sell pills, three sell sex, and the last spot is for Everything Else.

A sexually repressed nation? I don't think that's quite so-- unless of course we're also Prescriptionally repressed and Automotively repressed.

To each their own. I myself think sex in this country is blown out of proportion by both sides in many cases.

204. in a way, prudishness is what makes this type of ad campaign successful
It's like our society's attitude towards alcohol: Prohibition made it the biggest thing since sliced bread, raising the drinking age beyond the voting-and-dying-for-your-country-age ensured college binge drinking as a perpetual forbidden fruit, while cultures with a more permissive attitude towards alcohol and sex education seem to have fewer problems with alcohol poisoning and unwanted pregnancy (although they have bigger soccer hooligan issues, but we have Wal*Mart hooligans).

209. I simply don't see the U.S as prudish
I simply don't see the U.S as prudish. We see to be obsessed with it-- and not in a fashion that simply or merely teases with the forbidden fruit, but in a fashion in which the forbidden fruit is advertised to the point of saturation and it becomes merely fruit, nothing forbidden about it at all.

And we are absolutely saturated with images of sexuality as much as we are saturated with images of the latest model cars and the latest model prescription drugs. Our clothing, music, and entertainments are heavily focused on sex.

Sure, we don't heavily campaign for topless/nude beaches as the norm in this country, but other than that, sex and sexual images are around us far more often than not.

I think saying that our prudishness is the cause of the ad campaign's success is a bit post-hoc-ergo-prompter-hoc.

176. I think they are desparate and trying anything
my sister n law was one of their top managers running the company and they just laid her off a few months ago.

she told my mom the company is hurting bad because some big stores that carried their brand went out of business. and alot of people are buying specialty jeans these days.

i saw the ad also and thought it went over the top for family tv. the ad basically has two strangers meeting and going into a apartment they don't live in for hot sex. and they couldn't rip the jeans off fast enough.

sex sells...at least they are hoping so...look at abercrombie stores as you walk by.

182. One of the problems
Edited on Wed Dec-03-08 02:45 PM by dancingAlone
on this thread is that people are debating two different ads. The dock ad is just dumb, imo. And yes, teens get the joke.

It is the breaking and entering, and unprotected sex with a stranger, in the other ad that bothers me. Society should be a little better educated at this point in time, when unprotected sex can be deadly. And breaking and entering has always been against the law, as far as I know.

Kids really do take their cues from TV, whether they've been educated by their parents or not. There is definitely the attitude that if it's ok to show on prime time TV, then it must be ok. My kids know the difference between what is shown on cable and indie films, and what the family channels show. That is probably why I was so dumbfounded by this latest ad. It wasn't cute. There wasn't a joke at the end like the dock ad. It was just wrong in every way. And I'm not talking about having sex. It's about who a young person has sex with, and under what circumstances.

Edit: typo

jeans ads are supposed to be about fun, youth, and the promise of zipless sex -- and this is certainly nothing new but rather goes back many and many a decade -- this genre is supposed to hint at sex, what do you want? an ad about how practical it is to slop the hogs in my ass-embracing jeans?

the "live unbuttoned" ads i've seen have been relatively fun and harmless

"Anybody in the audience tonight in advertising? Marketing? Here's a suggestion: Kill yourself. No. Really. Kill yourself. No comedy. No bit. Kill yourself. Just plantin' seeds here."

That line seems to have ever-increasing relevance in this country. What a pity Dennis Leary didn't steal THAT line, too!
