Poll question: What's your cuttoff/opt out/nevermind point in posting a reply?
You see an interesting thread that you want to weigh in on and when you see a zillion replies you know whatever you had to say will just get lost in the pile and so you say 'the hell with it' and go back to the main discussion page.

So...how many replies do you have to see before you give up?

1. After too many replies, I also think
no one is going to read or care about what I have to say.

9. Also, I find that a few minutes after posting,
even I no longer care what I had to say.

26. The "My Posts" feature is pretty interesting. A lot of the time I find responses on it
that I have no particular recollection of having made.

Someone is probably going to read your post, right?
I mean, even buried in the middle of a long list of replies, someone might see the subject line and find it interesting enough to click on. I'll often scan the list for people I know, or for an interesting subject line, and click on it to see what it says. You never know.

13. Lady, you still crack me up.
Sorry to read your post about things turning to shit for you and Mr. gw.
We're not quite there yet, but our daughter has offered to pay our travel expenses to her home in Boston for Christmas because she knows we're hurting.

The IRA has been nuked.
I'm conflicted about accepting charity from her, although they (happily) can well afford it.
I still got my pride.
So far.
This could change.

They want to do something for you and make you proud of them. Besides, what else have we got if we don't got family?

23. Miz t. talked me into it. Schmaltz follows:
(In American English, schmaltz (adj. schmaltzy) has an informal meaning of excessively sentimental.)

She made two points.
1. We have a window of enjoyment opportunity with our two grandchildren.
As they get older they'll want to hang out with their peers and grandma and grandpa won't be their heroes for a while.
If we live long enough, we may achieve 'revered and wise' later.

2. We have a window of enjoyment opportunity with our two grandchildren.
We're in our 60s and in relatively good health.
But that could change with the next doctor's visit.
Or trip to the grocery store.
We don't have a clue as to how long we'll be here.

So we better enjoy this life and this lovely and loving family as much as we can, while we can.
She's a smart lady.
That's not why I married her, but it's been a pleasant and welcome discovery.
:-)

4. 20 or so in the main thread.
If there is a hot sub thread, the total number of replies often matters far less.

6. At about 175, I just scan for the long subthreads.
because that's a flamefest and I can't help myself.

But really, most of them aren't really interesting to an outsider. They're usually not worth the effort to make sense out of them

11. If there are more than forty, chances are that someone has said approximately the same thing
I wanted to say.

The really long threads I read for interest or enjoyment and only rarely contribute to, or just kick and rec.

If it's something really close to my heart and it's a hot, relevant topic and I have something worthwhile to say about it, I might occassionally use the OP as a springboard to make a new thread. But that's the exception, not the rule.

12. Actually, so many subthreads crop up in large popular threads...
that posts get discussed/argued even though the same content is repeated in several other subthreads as you scroll down... So, go ahead and post.. Someone will read it and agree (or get p/o'd)

16. I never think that people are going to read what I post.
I know that sounds silly, but it's true. Thinking this way, you might ask why I post at all. Hmmm. I post when I have something to say. If someone reads it or surprisingly replies, that's just good extra stuff. Years ago I learned not to expect replies or even expect people to read my sometimes long winded posts. It's all good now. I just pop in and pop out. There can be a hundred posts and I might still post. Maybe I would draw the line at 300. Then again, I might not.

Has anyone read this? :)

19. I read it. I rarely have a post go ballistic.
But I do read every reply.
Sometimes (rarely) I can't reply to every one.
Some don't need a reply.
I do try to reply to any that ask a question or for clarification.

BTW, I wish the English language had some distinction between 'red' )past tense) and 'reed' (present tense).

20. I look at who has responded.
If it's full of the Obama-Rahma Never-Fails, a mere hand-full of nincompoops and party-firsters, I usually don't bother. Unless someone says something really stupid and makes themselves a target. I love tearing down folks who can march without thought...wakes them up, sorta, don'cha know. At least it gets the attention of the casual observer to their prone position on the walk through life.

22. Someone needed to pick 300, so I did.
But it doesn't really matter. If you don't want to get lost at the bottom, reply to an early post, so your reply will come fairly early in the list.

27. I try to do that, but
for some reason my timing is always off

By the time I get to a thread, there's usually more than 20 posts. Which is OK...but more than 40 or 50 and I figure my contribution is going to be lost in the shuffle.

Especially in the morning...I get up and click on the main page, read down the list of threads on the side, and most of them already have tons of replies. I'm thinking, damn...don't these people ever sleep?
