Global Gag Order

I recently discovered Boston Legal (I highly recommend this show for others who have yet to discover it; this is the last season but it will be in reruns, hopefully forever!). Last night I watched an old episode that mentioned a US policy which, I must admit, I had never heard of. The Global Gag Order, also known as the Mexico City Policy.

I was appalled by the policy, yet equally appalled by my ignorance. I can't believe over all these years at DU I never saw this mentioned. Perhaps there are others unaware of this, so I'm sharing.

It is our policy, started under Reagan, rescinded under Clinton, reinstated on W's first day in office, to place conditions on funding of clinics around the world: they can't perform or even mention the word "abortion."

Surely President-Elect Obama will rescind this policy on his first day.
