Mich. medical pot law now in effect amid questions
by The Associated Press
Thursday December 04, 2008, 5:02 PM

DETROIT -- Medical marijuana became legal in Michigan on Thursday, a month after being overwhelmingly approved by voters. But patients looking to relieve pain, nausea and loss of appetite don't have the go-ahead to light up just yet.

The new law allows patients with cancer, HIV, AIDS, glaucoma and other diseases to use marijuana to relieve their symptoms on a doctor's recommendation.

Qualifying patients can register with the state and receive ID cards allowing them to legally acquire, possess, grow, transport and use a limited amount -- no more than 2.5 ounces and 12 plants -- of marijuana. They also can designate a primary caregiver to receive similar protection.

But those cards won't be issued until sometime next year, after the Department of Community Health introduces guidelines addressing how applications will be handled, what fees will be charged and other issues. The rules must be finalized by April 4.

1. It's immoral not to legalize medical marijuana, congrats Michigan
I firmly believe that my cousin would be alive today if she had been able to eat a nutritious diet during her first bout with cancer. But when the cure makes that impossible without the aid of a known substance that can help override that nausea because some tight asses have their knickers in a knot over legalizing medical marijuana I find that abhorrent.

2. I think Michigan ought to be the first state to go legal.
They have the perfect reason. They are and have been the most economically downtrodden state in the union for 30 years. The federal government has undermined the Michigan economy through it's trade pacts with other nations and it shows no sign of changing course.

Michigan should legalize and block federal law enforcement from enforcing federal anti marijuana laws in the state. They need to make a big deal out of it to force the fed's to either help the Michigan economy or let them help themselves.
